I’ve refined it over the years and I’m offering it to you to use in your hypnosis session. I’m doing this because I understand how, in the beginning, you need some really good examples of scripts in order to do good work and build your confidence. Plus, even if you have lots of experience, there is always that time when you could use a little inspiration when writing up a custom script for a new client.

This script was previous published on my hypnosis websites, www.Hypnosis.ORG and www.HypnosisCenter.com.

Before you begin using the “script” that is to follow, please read these comments, because this is really more than a script or hypnosis patter when you really begin to understand how you can use it.

Since 5-PATH® is a universal approach to doing hypnotherapy, it seemed that it would be extremely useful if a universal approach to direct suggestion parts of the process could be developed. This script is virtually universal because it is extremely flexible. In actuality, there could be no such thing as a completely universal script that would work in every case, but I believe this approach comes pretty close. It uses the idea of coming to a “fork in the road,” to represent a life-changing choice. This idea idiom is found in almost every culture in one form or another. It also uses the familiar idea of a “High Road” and a “Low Road” of which the “High Road” is universally accepted as being the preferable choice, which may require some effort, but well worth it.

This approach to the direct suggestion parts of the session will be particularly effective for those who want to change behavior (as opposed to mood or phobia problems, but can be used in this case also). The behaviors could include smoking, over-eating, drug or alcohol abuse, even things like shyness, or any other self-defeating behavior.

Also, this script can be followed by additional patter, or a more precise patter containing suggestions for the specific change that your client wants to make, if you deem it necessary or useful. In that case, this script can be considered as a way to prepare the client for maximum suggestibility for the coming suggestions.

When using this script, I recommend that the experienced therapist, use it mostly in principle, and freely vary from it. Freely adapt it to your client’s needs and personality (and your style of delivery), changing wording as you see fit, to accomplish the goal. The goal here is to make the client highly suggestible for suggestions associated to the change they want to make. This is vividly accomplished by way of comparing, what they have been doing along with its outcome (i.e., the difficulties that smoking causes), and the likely outcome of making the change (i.e. better health as a nonsmoker).

In the script, doing the easy thing (taking the Low Road), is associated with ultimate failure, while putting some effort into making the change is associated with ultimate success and achievement (taking the High Road).

When you take your client down the Low Road, remember to have her become aware of the people and objects associated with that low and painful road. For example, if working with a smoker, as you go down the bad road of smoking, have her look at all of the cigarette butts and ashtrays along the way, so that the emotional pain of the Low Road experience becomes associated with those items. If you are working with a substance abuser, have her look at all of the paraphernalia and drug-using friends that are all along that road. This is useful because it helps your client to break free from associating pleasure with these items and individuals. Then they can begin to associate pleasure and success with the people and things on the road on the right as you point them out.

The High Road to Success

Today you are standing at a fork in the road of your life. You have come to a decision point. Should you continue to do what you have been doing with regard to____________________?

You think about all the problems and concerns that __________ brings into your life.

(Mention some of the reasons that your client told you she wants to make the change).

The road on the left is a slow downward road. It is easy to take the Low Road. You could just coast down it. It is the path of doing what you have been doing for so long. But, it is a path of misery. The road on the right goes upward. It will take some effort to take the High Road. But, it is the way of freedom, health and life. It is the road of being in control of your life. It is the High Road to Success!

Look at the road on the left. It means carrying all of the problems associated with continuing to ________with you even longer than you already have. Think of how bad ________makes you feel. Really allow yourself to feel the weight of the burden of this self-destructive behavior. Feel your desire to be free from all of the ill effects of hurting yourself this way.

I’m going to count from 1 to 3, and we are going to go down that low road of being out of control one more year. 1, 2, 3! There you are, after one more year of being out of control–of being miserable because you have continued to______________________________. You feel the weight of the disappointment in yourself. You notice the things that litter this painful way of living (mention paraphernalia, such as ashtrays, bottles, etc.) (If it seems appropriate to the issue, point out the people associated with the problem, the bad influences.) There is a mirror there and you see yourself and you ask yourself, “Am I pleased with myself? Am I happy to have another year of __________? Do I feel better having made this decision? Do I feel healthier or worse? Do I look and feel better about myself, or not? Do I feel smarter? Feel the disappointment you have in yourself for continuing to __________________for another year!”

I’m going to count from 1 to 3 and we are going to go down to the 5 year point on this road of being free of ___________ to the year ______! 1, 2, 3! There you are, after 5 more years of being on the low road. Bring forth all of the effects of that choice! Really allow yourself to feel the effects of that decision. You feel ___________. You feel hopeless. Now look around you and you see all of the (mention items associated with the problem, i.e., ashtrays, or candy wrappers, etc). Those are the things that have done this to you. So, you can’t stand them anymore. Maybe you even hate the sight of them. If there are people associated with doing this _____________, are they really your friends? Do they really care about you? Again, you ask yourself, “Am I pleased with myself for ___________ for 5 more years? Do I have the right to do this to myself? Am I healthier for making this choice? How is it affecting my life? Is my life better or worse? Do I feel smarter for _________________ for an additional 5 years?”

And now, I count from 1 to 3 and we move down to the 10-year point on this low road of continuing to the year_________. 1, 2, 3! There you are after 10 more years of hurting yourself by _____________. Once again, bring forth all of the cumulative effects of that choice! Really allow yourself to feel the effects of that decision, of continuing to _______for 10 more years. You feel _____________. You feel more hopeless. Again, you look around you and you see all of the (mention items associated with the problem, i.e., ashtrays, or candy wrappers, etc). Those are the things that have done this to you. So, you can’t stand them anymore.

Maybe you even hate the sight of them. If there are people associated with doing this _____________, are they really your friends? Do they really care about you? How do you feel about them? There is a mirror there and you look at yourself. You ask yourself, “Am I pleased with myself for ___________ for 10 more years? Is my life better or worse? Do I feel intelligent for ________ for an additional 10 years?” Really feel the consequences of remaining on this low but easy road.

As I count back from 5 to 1, you come all the way back to the beginning of the fork in the road. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. And, you feel better because none of that has to happen yet and it doesn’t have to… You have decided not to let that happen to you. You have decided to take the High Road of Success on the right! You know that it will take a little more effort, but now you know in your heart and mind that it is worth it. You have decided to start taking better care of yourself! In fact you have already left the old way by coming here today! You are already taking your first steps toward freedom and success on the road on the right.

Let’s see how this new decision to ____________ for life affects you. You think about all the good positive changes that becoming free from the self-destructive habit has brought into your life! Being free from all those problems–the feeling of really being in control and confidant. You are now on the path on the right, it means success and a feeling of energy and optimism.

I’m going to count from 1 to 3, and we are going to go down that road of having made this change for one year. 1, 2, 3! There you are, after one year of being in control. You feel good, great! You have done it you are a success and you never felt better and you are going to feel even better yet! There is a mirror there and you see yourself and you ask yourself, “Am I pleased with myself? Am I happy to have accomplished my goal for a whole year? (If it seems appropriate to the problem, point out the things/items and people associated with this new way of living and being.) Do I feel better having made this healthy decision? Do I feel smarter?” Feel the pride and health that is inside of you. Was it worth it? Do you want to continue to stay on the High Road of Success?

I’m going to count from 1 to 3 and we are going to go down to the 5 year point on this road of being successful in making this change to the year_______! 1,2,3! There you are, after 5 more years of success, of reaping the rewards of making this permanent change in how you ____________. 5 years of being in control and energized! Bring forth right now all of the effects of that choice! Really allow yourself to feel the effects of that decision. You feel strong. Everything in your life is better for having made this permanent change. Enjoy the feeling of knowing that you have made a permanent change, knowing that you will never go back to the old way.

And now, I count from 1 to 3 and we move down to the 10-year point on this High Road of Success to the year _______. 1, 2, 3, and there you are, after 10 more years of making this good and positive change in your life. Bring forth all of the effects of that smart choice! Really allow yourself to feel the effects of that decision, of continuing to be in control for 10 more years.

_________________ is now simply something that you used to do. It was a mistake to have ever done it, but now you are free and will remain free for the rest of your life! You look into that mirror one more time and ask yourself, “Am I pleased with myself for __________________ for 10 more years? Would I ever go back to that old bad habit of hurting myself by ________________? Am I glad that I have made this permanent change? A change made for good?” Of course, you are!

I count back to 1 and you are back in the year __________________, 5,4,3,2,1. You now have a new found level of certainty that you are ready–really ready to make this change! You are now ready to accept powerful hypnotic suggestions to help to keep you on the road on the right, the High Road of Success.

Now, your subconscious mind fully accepts the suggestion that you will never ________________ again. (Or, “From now on you will ___________________________.”) This keeps you on the High Road of Success on the right. (Repeat and add benefits that your client expects to receive from making this change. For example, “Now that you have decided to become a non-smoker for good, you will find_____.”)

This script can then be followed up with a short patter script or direct drive technique, etc. It really prepares clients for further suggestions or procedures such as Forgiveness Therapy or Parts Mediation Therapy, that help your clients make the changes that they want to make. We often use this script for smoking and then follow it up with another smoking cessation script.

Here is an example of how the approach can be used when working with smoking cessation. Alterations and adaptations will be in bold.

The High Road to Success: As A Nonsmoker

Today you are standing at a fork in the road of your life. You have come to a decision point. Should you continue to do what you have been doing with regard to smoking?

You think about all the problems and concerns that smoking brings into your life.

(Mention some of the reasons your client told you she wants to make the change).

You think about how it has robbed you of money, energy, health, and having a sense of control over your life.

The road on the left is a slow downward road. It is easy to take the Low Road. You could just coast down it. It is the path of doing what you have been doing for so long, by continuing to smoke. But, it is a path of misery. The road on the right goes upward. It will take some effort to take the High Road. But, it is the way of freedom, health and life. It is the road of being in control of your life. It is the High Road To Success! It is the road you have decided to take as a nonsmoker.

Look at the road on the left. It means carrying all of the problems associated with continuing to smoke with you even longer than you already have. Think of how bad smoking makes you feel. Really allow yourself to feel the weight of the burden of this self-destructive behavior. Feel your desire to be free from all of the ill effects of hurting yourself by smoking and taking poison into your body.

I’m going to count from 1 to 3, and we are going to go down that low road of being out of control one more year. 1, 2, 3! There you are, after one more year of being out of control–of being miserable because you have continued to smoke cigarettes. You feel the weight of the disappointment in yourself. You notice the things that litter this painful way of living-filthy ashtrays, burns in fabrics and furniture, and the smell! You see a road littered with cigarette butts, and cartons or packs of cigarettes. You see them and they make you feel this way. (mention the associated paraphernalia, such as ashtrays, bottles, etc.) You see others that you know, who smoke, maybe it is the ones that you have smoked with, or others that you have seen huddled together outside of buildings or stuck in the smoking section of restaurants, and the sight of them makes you feel sorry for them, they are stuck on the Low Road of being a smoker. (If it seems appropriate to the issue, point out the people associated with the problem, the bad influences.) There is a mirror there and you see yourself and you ask yourself, “Am I pleased with myself? Am I happy to have another year of smoking cigarettes? Do I feel better having made this decision? Do I feel healthier or worse? Do I look and feel better about myself, or not? Do I feel smarter?” Feel the disappointment you have in yourself for continuing to smoke for another year!

I’m going to count from 1 to 3 and we are going to go down to the 5 year point on this road of a smoker to the year ______! 1, 2, 3! There you are after 5 more years of being on the Low Road. Bring forth all of the effects of that choice! Really allow yourself to feel the effects of that decision. You feel unhealthy, worried about the effects of putting tobacco poison in your mouth every day. You feel hopeless. Now look around you and you see all of those cartons and packs of cigarettes that you have bought, the dirty stinking ashtrays, the butts, the smell on your clothes and hands and face, and you hate it because it brings in all of these terrible feelings of feeling out of control, a victim of tobacco marketing. (Mention items associated with the problem, i.e., ashtrays, or candy wrappers, etc). Those are the things that have done this to you. So, you can’t stand them anymore. Maybe you even hate the sight of them. You see others on the path, and they look terrible and they feel terrible. They are outsiders. Society is pushing them out, because they seem so ignorant or stubborn and they smell. No one wants them around their children, or to be around them socially or even at work because they smell. You may have smoked with some of these people. Are they really your friends? Do they really care about you? Again, you ask yourself, “Am I pleased with myself for smoking for 5 more years? Do I have the right to do this to myself? Am I healthier for smoking? How is it affecting my life? Is my life better or worse? Do I feel smarter for smoking for an additional 5 years?”

And now I count from 1 to 3 and we move down to the 10-year point on this low road of continuing to the year_________. 1, 2, 3! There you are after 10 more years of hurting yourself by smoking. Once again, bring forth all of the cumulative effects of that choice! Really allow yourself to feel the effects of that decision, of continuing to smoke for 10 more years. You feel tired and worried about your health. You feel more hopeless. Again, you look around you and you see all of the things that are associated with making you feel this way, the ashtrays, the cigarette butts, the pack and cartons of tobacco poison in the form of cigarettes (mention items associated with the problem, i.e., ashtrays, or candy wrappers, etc). Those are the things that have done this to you. So, you can’t stand them anymore. Maybe, you even hate the sight of them. Just looking at all that stuff associated with smoking makes you feel this way. You see the others who are on the road of being out of control with smoking. Maybe you wish you could help them. Some may be family or friends. Notice, how seeing them smoke makes you feel about cigarettes. There is a mirror there and you look at yourself. You ask yourself, “Am I pleased with myself for smoking for 10 more years? Is my life better or worse? Do I feel intelligent for being a smoker for an additional 10 years?” Really feel the consequences of remaining on this low but easy road.

As I count back from 5 to 1, you come all the way back to the beginning of the fork in the road. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. And, you feel better because none of that has to happen yet and it doesn’t have to… You have decided not to let that happen to you. You have decided to take the High Road of Success on the right! You know that it will take a little more effort, but now you know in your heart and mind that it is worth it. You have decided to start taking better care of yourself! In fact you have already left the old way by coming here today! You are already taking your first steps toward freedom and success on the road on the right as a nonsmoker for good!

Let’s see how this new decision to be free from the smoking habit for life affects you. You think about all the good positive changes that becoming free from the self-destructive habit has brought into your life! Am I happy to have accomplished my goal of being a nonsmoker for a whole year?” There are some new things in your life because you are more active and energetic. You are spending more and more time with friends that are on this High Road of success. You have inspired others to make this good healthy choice. (If it seems appropriate to the problem, point out the things/items and people associated with this new way of living and being.) “Do I feel better having made this healthy decision? Do I feel smarter? Feel the pride and health that is inside of you. Was it worth it? Do you want to continue to stay on the High Road of Success?” You have decided that this life of a nonsmoker is the right life for you.

Really allow yourself to feel the effects of that decision. You feel strong. This is how it feels as a nonsmoker. Everything in your life is better for having made this permanent change. Enjoy the feeling of knowing that you have made a permanent change, knowing that you will never go back to the old way.

You are now ready to accept powerful hypnotic suggestion to help to keep you on the road on the right, the High Road of Success, the road of a nonsmoker. The following is an example of how you can modify the script for weight loss.

The High Road to Success: And Becoming Lean and Healthy

Today you are standing at a fork in the road of your life. You have come to a decision point. Should you continue to do what you have been doing with regard to taking good care of your body?

You think about all the problems and concerns that being overweight brings into your life.

(Mention some of the reasons your client told you she wants to make the change).

You think about how being overweight has robbed you of energy, health, success and feeling confident about your appearance.

The road on the left is a slow downward road. It is easy to take the Low Road. You could just coast down it. It is the path of doing what you have been doing for so long, by continuing to be out of control to eating for the wrong reasons. But, it is a path of misery. The road on the right goes upward. It will take some effort to take the High Road. But, it is the way of freedom, health and life. It is the road of being in control of your life. It is the High Road To Success! It is the road you have decided to take by eating only when it is healthy to do so, and to eat in only a healthy way.

Look at the road on the left. It means carrying all of the problems associated with continuing to be overweight with you even longer than you already have. Think of how bad overeating and snacking can make you feel. Really allow yourself to feel the weight of the burden of this self-destructive behavior. Feel your desire to be free from all of the ill effects of hurting yourself by eating this way and not exercising your body sufficiently.

I’m going to count from 1 to 3, and we are going to go down that low road of being out of control one more year. 1, 2, 3! There you are, after one more year of being out of control–of being miserable because you have continued to be overweight. You feel the weight of the disappointment in yourself. You notice the things that litter this painful way of living-the snack food and candy wrappers–the second helpings or the portions that were too large, which made you too large. You see those kinds of things and they make you feel this way (mention paraphernalia, such as ice-cream, chocolates, candy, etc.). You see others that you know, who are out of control to bad eating behaviors, maybe it is the ones that you have eaten or snacked with, and the sight of them makes you feel sorry for them, they are stuck on the Low Road of being a overweight. Some of them may have even tempted you to lose control. (If it seems appropriate to the issue, point out the people associated with the problem, the bad influences.) There is a mirror there and you see yourself and you ask yourself, “Am I pleased with myself? Am I happy to have another year of being out of control to food? Do I feel better having made this decision? Do I feel healthier or worse? Do I look and feel better about myself, or not? Do I feel smarter?” Feel the disappointment you have in yourself for continuing to live this way for another year!

I’m going to count from 1 to 3 and we are going to go down to the 5 year point on this road of being overweight to the year ______! 1, 2, 3! There you are after 5 more years of being on the Low Road. Bring fourth all of the effects of that choice! Really allow yourself to feel the effects of that decision. You feel unhealthy, worried about the effects of putting too much food in your mouth every day. You feel hopeless. Now look around you and you see all of those snack food wrappers, and large portions of food. The road is littered with wrappers and empty dishes, and emotional pain. You hate looking at them because it brings back all of these terrible feelings of feeling out of control and overweight, a victim of marketing and habits. (Mention items associated with the problem, i.e., ashtrays, or candy wrappers, etc). Those are the things that have done this to you. So, you can’t stand them anymore. Maybe you even hate the sight of them. You see others on the path, and they look terrible and they feel terrible because they eat too much or the wrong kind of things, and they don’t get enough exercise. They are outsiders. Society is pushing them out, because they seem so ignorant or stubborn. Some people don’t even want to be around them socially or even at work. You may have cheated on a diet with some of these people. Are they really your friends? Do they really care about you? Again, you ask yourself, “Am I pleased with myself for being overweight for 5 more years? Do I have the right to do this to myself? Am I healthier for eating too much and not getting enough exercise? How is it affecting my life? Is my life better or worse? Do I feel smarter for being overweight for an additional 5 years?”

And now I count from 1 to 3 and we move down to the 10-year point on this low road of continuing to the year_________. 1, 2, 3! There you are after 10 more years of hurting yourself by overeating. Once again, bring fourth all of the cumulative effects of that choice! Really allow yourself to feel the effects of that decision, of continuing to be overweight for 10 more years. You feel tired and worried about your health. You feel more hopeless. Are you heavier? Again, you look around you and you see all of the things that are associated with making you feel this way, the foods and behaviors such as just sitting there and eating while you watch television or work on the computer or read. (Mention items associated with the problem, i.e., ashtrays, or candy wrappers, etc). You see all the things that you eat that have caused this to happen to you, snacks, cakes, cookies and second helpings. Those are the things that have done this to you. So, you can’t stand them anymore. Maybe you even hate the sight of them. Just looking at all that stuff associated with being overweight makes you feel this way. You see the others who are on the road of being out of control to food. Maybe you wish you could help them. Some may be family or friends. Notice how seeing them eat too much, or the wrong things, makes you feel about doing those kinds of things yourself. There is a mirror there and you look at yourself. You ask yourself, “Am I pleased with myself for being overweight for 10 more years? Is my life better or worse? Do I feel intelligent for being out of control this way for an additional 10 years?” Really feel the consequences of remaining on this low but easy road.

As I count back from 5 to 1 you come all the way back to the beginning of the fork in the road. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. And, you feel better because none of that has to happen yet and it doesn’t have to… You have decided not to let that happen to you. You have decided to take the High Road of Success on the right! You know that it will take a little more effort, but now you know in your heart and mind that it is worth it. You have decided to start taking better care of yourself! Overeating and eating too much is now simply something that you used to do. It was a mistake to have ever allowed yourself to become overweight, but now you are free from the fat and will remain free for the rest of your life! You look into that mirror one more time and ask yourself, “Am I pleased with myself for making this good healthy change in my life for 10 more years? Would I ever go back to that old bad habit of hurting myself by making myself fat? Am I glad that I have made this permanent change?” A change made for good! Of course, you are!

I count back to 1 and you are back in the year __________________, 5,4,3,2,1. You now have a new found level of certainty that you are ready–really ready to make this change! You are now ready to accept powerful hypnotic suggestion to help to keep you on the road on the right, the High Road of Success, the road of always being in control of eating and exercise. Now your subconscious mind fully accepts the suggestion that you will never be overweight again. From now on you will always make being slim and healthy one of the most important things in your life. You will always check to see if you are hungry before you put anything to eat in your mouth. If you feel bad, you will respond to your feelings in a way that goes to the cause of the feelings. You will never again distract yourself or try to make yourself feel better by eating! If you need to make yourself feel better, you can do something else, any good and pleasant thing, so long as it isn’t illegal, immoral or fattening. This will keep you free to be happier and healthier for the rest of your life! This keeps you on the High Road of Success on the right. (Repeat and add benefits that your client expects to receive from making this change. For example, “You will always be able to maintain a slim and healthy body, because you will always remember that there is always something better to do than make yourself fat by eating too much or too frequently, or the wrong kinds of things. By doing this you have improved your life in every way!”)

Again let me end this by saying that this is intended to be a very flexible approach. Use it as a basic structure, and adapt it to the needs of your clients. For example, if for some reason your client is unable to exercise, then don’t suggest that she exercise. If she can exercise and does not want to, you can’t make her begin a program of exercise. In such a case, I would ask her how she feels about the idea of just becoming more active by parking farther away from the office or taking the stairs rather than the elevator. If she likes that approach, I suggest those kinds of behaviors.

It is time for 5-PATH® hypnotherapists to move beyond the written script! I present to you this “universal” script as a way of accomplishing that goal.

Thanks for your message. From our perspective the DCH is worthless. It is not a real degree with "regional accreditation". And we do our best to recommend that hypnosis professionals do not become associated with such non-academic programs.

I recommend that you have a look here to learn more about the kinds of problems that these "degrees" can cause.

I understand that such programs can require you to read many books, even attend lectures, and require one to write a paper/thesis/dissertation, etc. But they are still not real, and do not meet regular academic standards and as such, should be avoided. I understand that one can learn a lot from reading all those books etc. but still the degrees are not real.

With this in mind, we cannot recognize your DCH, and would have to decline your request unless you can show that you have had previous certification in hypnosis or hypnotherapy by a reputable organization such as the National Guild of Hypnotists.

Well, there you go. I am certainly not the hypno-sheriff. I can’t keep anyone from becoming involved in this kind of thing. But, I do want to put it out there. Don’t be fooled by these "degree" programs.

What do you think of these degrees? Do you have one? Were you thinking of getting one? I believe that they are deceptive and that when one holds that "degree" out as a qualification to the public, individuals seeking services will think that it is real. This is unfair, because an individual with this degree is not necessarily more qualified than anyone else offering hypnosis or hypnotherapy services. As a matter of fact, the hypnotists and hypnotherapists practicing today may be much more qualified and not have the degree.

Do you want a degree? Good! I’m all for education. I have both a BS and MA in Psychology. But they are certainly not required in order to be qualified to do this work.

I’m thinking that a really smart person like Obama, if he really wanted to quit smoking, he could do it. Seriously, lots of people have done it, either by using sheer willpower, a medical intervention such as the patch, or through hypnosis.

Here are some examples of homework for your hypnotherapy clients:

• Teach them self-hypnosis. If our clients are open to learning; we teach them 7th Path Self-Hypnosis®.

• Suggest a television program to reinforce hypnotic suggestions. For example, if they are working on weight loss, then have them watch shows about successful weight loss. (Shows like "The Biggest Loser" or "I Can Make You Thin").

• To reinforce the hypnotherapy, you can suggest a magazine to your client, (Topics such as weddings, health, nutrition, fitness, etc.).

• Suggest that your client join support groups (online or in person). Websites like Meetup.com are great for finding people with similar interests and goals.

• You can also supercharge your hypnosis sessions by suggesting motivational movies (Like "Rocky" or "Don’t Tell Her It’s Me").

• Increase the effectiveness of your hypnosis sessions by suggesting online videos and media. Ted.com has great videos on a variety of subjects.

Generating Client Involvement

Client results, in terms of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional shifts, can range from disappointing to spectacular. One of the contingencies for success, is the client’s internal level of involvement in the process. Knowing how to engage and encourage this critical factor (pun intended) rests in the hands of the hypnotherapist. The clients internal thought process is out of our control, and being skilled in your approach isn’t enough if the client remains dissociated from the process.

For those of you who use a directive approach, and integrate it with insight oriented techniques such as Age Regression, the clients level of openness and participation will have just as much of an effect on their progress as their inherent level of insightfulness. Occasionally, a client go through the standard process and experience average results, only to admit to you later, that there is content they have been avoiding. Sometimes you can see this situation coming a mile away, sometimes you can’t. This is why rapport is so important, as it encourages your client to feel safe enough to reveal what bubbles up, and follow your lead. But talking about rapport is not the only key to success when setting the stage for optimal client involvement.

Cal Banyan: First, I want to say thank you for taking the time to do this hypnosis professional interview! I am very proud to have contributed to your background and training in hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Please tell us about your background before becoming a hypnotherapist?

Alexandra Bley: Thanks, Cal, I really appreciate the opportunity to share my background and experience as a hypnosis professional. I feel very enthusiastic and a great sense of fulfillment in the work I am doing and my intention is to not only share this but also be an inspiration to others. I consider it a gift to get up in the morning and look forward to going to work and seeing my clients.

My background before my career as a professional hypnotherapist was in Science. I was born and raised in Germany. After finishing my MS in Biology, I moved to the United States to do research for a pharmaceutical company in the San Francisco Bay Area. I was only planning to stay for a couple of years, but was intrigued by the cultural aspects, the open-mindedness and the tremendous potential for personal growth and development in this area, it turned out I really liked living here! I now have an established private hypnosis practice in Palo Alto, California and have been residing in this area together with my family for well over a decade.

Cal: That is great, I love California as well. Why did you decide to learn hypnosis and become a hypnotist and hypnotherapist?

Alexandra: Even before the research time at the Bay Area pharmaceutical company, I developed a strong interest in alternative healing methods that are less invasive and more holistic, and that considered all aspects of the human body including the mind. I am a very compassionate person and love working with people and doing pharmaceutical research didn’t allow this part of my personality to be fulfilled.

What really inspired and started me on my path as a hypnotherapist was my own personal experience with hypnosis. In the attempt to overcome a personal issue using mainstream as well as alternative medical approaches (and by all means those approaches have their validity also) with only temporary or limited success, a dear friend of mine recommended hypnosis. At that point I flew to Los Angeles, because I really didn’t know anyone in my area who was a hypnosis practitioner.

After just one session I felt tremendous relief, as I had accomplished more and gained more insight in myself than in a couple of years of using traditional approaches to resolve my issue. The best part is that it was EASY! What really intrigued me about hypnosis was the understanding I gained about the power of my own mind, in particular how my own thoughts and beliefs influenced the well being of my physical body, as well as my life experiences. I was very pleased to find out that I could be my own best healer and that I was in control of my own life.

My own personal experience was the answer to my desire to help and guide others in making positive changes in their lives and led me to being trained as a professional hypnotherapist shortly thereafter.

Being a professional hypnotherapist gives me the possibility to combine my individual talents and experience, as well as my scientific background, in a very meaningful, enjoyable and fulfilling way.

Cal: Yes, you are what I call a “true believer” because you know that hypnosis works, because it has made a difference in your own life. Why don’t you tell me about your practice?

Alexandra: I have a successful private practice in Palo Alto, California where I have been providing my clients with a professional, confidential and compassionate environment for more than 5 years. All of my sessions are one-on-one and each session is tailored to the individual needs of the client in order to provide optimum results and benefits.

Hypnosis is a very powerful, yet non-invasive and completely safe tool to aid in the process of personal growth, healing and improvement in the quality of life. Done with the right approach, it can be incredibly insightful, transforming and empowering for the client.

I practice with the intention of using my skills and experience, in combination with the most advanced hypnosis and self-hypnosis techniques, to help my clients create better, healthier, happier and more successful lives.

When I work with someone, I allow for time to answer all of my client’s questions about hypnosis and hypnotherapy to make sure that my clients are comfortable and well informed about the process.

Cal: I can tell that you always keep your client’s best interests in mind and make sure that your clients are well prepared for the hypnosis process. Tell us about your training.

Alexandra: I received my initial hypnosis certification and additional certification as a Clinical and Medical Hypnotherapist, as well as a Master Hypnotherapist, through the Palo Alto School of Hypnotherapy in Palo Alto, California. This is where my office is located.

In addition, I am certified in one of the most modern and advanced hypnosis techniques known as 5- Phase Advanced Transformational Hypnosis (5-PATH®), as well as a Certified 7th Path Self- Hypnosis® Teacher, through the Banyan Hypnosis Center in Tustin, CA.

I have studied Milton Erickson’s work, EFT and get a lot of inspiration for my work from Ron Eslinger, Roy Hunter and Stephen Parkhill.

I am also a member of the National Guild of Hypnotists, one of the largest and oldest hypnosis organizations in the world, the 5- PATH® International Association of Hypnosis Professionals, and the American Association of Professional Hypnotherapists.

I love to keep myself inspired and up to date through continued professional training. This enables me to provide my clients with the most advanced, modern and effective hypnosis techniques for their success.

Cal: At the Banyan Hypnosis Center, we are proud to call you one of our graduates, a 5-PATHer. I also like your attitude about ongoing training and professional development.

Tell me, what is your approach to doing hypnosis and hypnotherapy?

Alexandra: As a professional hypnotherapist, I see myself mostly in the role of a teacher and facilitator for the process of positive transformation, change and healing in my clients. I believe in an insight-oriented approach where the client is part of the process and actively participates in achieving their individual goals. This makes my clients part of their own success and proves to be very empowering. My sessions always contain an educational component.

In order to make lasting or even permanent positive changes, I believe in taking the “old program“ out before putting something new in. It is mostly the erroneous beliefs and perceptions that we have accumulated over a lifetime, the ones we are not consciously aware of, that keep us from successfully reaching our goals. The 5-PATH® system in combination with 7th-Path self-hypnosis®, provide me with an excellent frame work for this kind of approach as it is very insightful for the client. This advanced form of hypnosis helps to uncover and most importantly change those old negative beliefs, perceptions and emotions in a relatively short period of time which allows my clients to successfully reach their individual goals.

My success comes from treating every client with an individual approach. It is my goal to use my skills and experience to provide not only an immediate benefit for clients, but also to provide them with tools to continue on the path of self-fulfillment beyond our sessions.

Cal: I’m so glad to hear that you are using 5-PATH® and 7th Path™ in your sessions, and that you have come to understand how flexible these systems are in working with a broad range of issues.

Please tell us about an interesting case you had recently, if you can.

Alexandra: I have had the opportunity to work with many different and interesting cases over the years. I guess this is one of the reasons I love my work so much as it brings people from all age groups, ethnic backgrounds, women, men, adults, teenagers and children alike into my office. Each and every person who comes to my office is special in their own way. Many of them don’t feel that wonderful when they call me for their first appointment. When those people leave my office and feel their own worthiness, maybe for the first time in a long time, and they realize that they have all it takes to lead a successful and happy life, I know I have done my job well.

Of course, there are particular cases that touch me. I worked with a teenage girl who had pulmonary hypertension and came to see me for pain management. Pulmonary hypertension is a rare lung disorder in which the arteries that carry blood from the heart to the lungs become narrowed, causing the pressure in the pulmonary artery to rise above normal levels, which can become life threatening. Medical treatment for this condition is rather challenging and known to be very painful. In fact, many patients have to discontinue the necessary treatment because they cannot tolerate the pain of the medications that have to be administered continuously. I worked with this girl a few times to prepare her for the medical procedures and taught her how she can control the sensations in her body. She was able to tolerate the treatment with little or no discomfort and used the techniques I taught her successfully when she felt she needed it. Later she came back to me to work on some other issue.

Just recently, I worked with a young man who came to see me for bed wetting. He was a very talented musician but his condition put a lot of restrictions on him. In our sessions together, we were able to identify the cause and remove the related stressors. After a few sessions he was free of his condition and is a happy, self-confident musician now.

Another case I remember is a woman who came to see me with a rash all over her body. She would scratch herself to the point that she was bleeding at night. After one session, she had stopped scratching and after three sessions, the rash was no longer visible.

Cal: Yes, even after all these years, it is still amazing to hear all of these success stories. I want to remind everyone of my view on this. Hypnosis doesn’t heal anything. Rather, properly used, hypnosis can remove stress from the body, and then the body, or one’s Higher Power can do the healing. Thanks for those case examples.

Generally speaking, what area do you serve, and what kinds of issues do your clients have?

Alexandra: My office is located in Palo Alto, California. However, I see clients who come from all over the San Francisco Bay Area. Some of the other areas that I serve include Menlo Park, Los Altos, Portola Valley, Woodside, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Cupertino, San Jose, Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, Burlingame, Oakland, Berkley, Santa Cruz and Monterey, as well as others.

As I mentioned before, I really appreciate that I get to work with a wide variety of issues. In fact, I can’t imagine any issue for which hypnosis might not be helpful.

I have successfully worked with weight loss, smoking cessation and other addictions or bad habits. I regularly see clients who are suffering from anxiety, fears and phobias as well as for emotional issues.

Self-improvement, self-esteem, and performance issues, especially sports performance and improved learning, are other common reasons people come to see me. Hypnosis works really well for insomnia.

Many people come to me before they have to undergo surgery because hypnosis can reduce recovery time and reduce pain. Doctors love it when their patients come in all relaxed for their procedure! I have also been very successful helping people to overcome relationship issues or deal with anger management.

Cal: That is just what I like to hear. I teach that we should first become generalists rather than specialists. That way we can help the most people, and have the most successful practices. Having said that, I’m wondering, do you have any specialties or favorite issues you like to work with?

Alexandra: Even though I help my clients with a wide variety of issues it seems that weight loss is the number one issue people come to see me for. I contribute my success in that area to the educational component of my sessions and the fact that I take different contributing factors into consideration when I work with those people. Helping my clients become aware of their bodies is an important part of this process. My intention is to help my clients establish healthy, balanced AND satisfying eating habits as a permanent way of living. When those healthy habits become a life style weight loss follows naturally. Hypnosis is not about dieting or deprivation but rather, it is about awareness. If everyone would only eat when hungry and stop when they are full, no one would have to be overweight. Hypnosis for weight loss is not rocket science. It is easy when you know how!

Cal: That is great news. Maintaining a healthy weight positively affects everything in our lives.

I think this is an interesting question, why do you think that your clients select you over other hypnotherapists?

Alexandra: When people choose a hypnotherapist, they want someone who is experienced and skilled to work with a wide variety of issues AND someone they can trust. I provide a compassionate, confidential and professional environment where each client is treated with an individual approach that fits the need of the client for maximum success. I take my time before, during and after the session to answer all questions and make sure that I have a good understanding of the goals the client wants to reach. My advanced hypnosis training has allowed me to work successfully with a wide variety of issues and most importantly I know for sure whether my clients are in hypnosis or not!

Having successfully worked with different medical as well as emotional issues, I get referrals from a number of medical doctors, psychiatrists and counselors in the Bay Area.

Cal: What would you like everyone to know about hypnosis?

Hypnosis works! It is one of the fastest, easiest and safest ways for self improvement and personal growth I have come across so far.

Cal: I can totally agree with that, and the word is getting out.

What do you see as being the future of hypnosis?

Alexandra: There are so many different applications for hypnosis and hypnotherapy. I like to see that hypnosis gets more and more attention in the medical world, and not only for pain management. The fact that I receive an increasing number of referrals from medical doctors definitely shows a shift and openness with respect to using hypnosis for a wide variety of issues.

It seems that hypnosis continues to lose its “Hollywood movie” mentality, even though my son asked me the other day if he could hypnotize me so that he could have his birthday every day like one of the heroes in his favorite cartoon on TV!

We live in a time and place of so much more awareness. People want to be healthy and live happier and more successful lives. They want to be in control and take responsibility for their lives. I can really see hypnosis as well as self-hypnosis becoming a very common and mainstream approach in medicine, psychology and personal development. We are what we believe and believes can be changed using the power of our own minds. It is that easy!

Cal: Alexandra, thanks so much for taking the time to do this interview. I’m sure that other hypnosis professionals and those who are thinking about coming to the profession will be inspired by it, as well as those looking for hypnosis services.

Today, I’m writing about some very special Internet technology that we have been using now for over 2 1/2 years, the ability to provide high quality, hands-on, hypnosis and hypnotherapy certification training over the Internet. I’m writing this article because we are constantly receiving requests from teachers and students wanting to know how we do it.

First off, let me tell you, this is a fairly complicated process and should not be undertaken by those who are not fully dedicated to doing it right. If you don’t do it right, you will ruin it for those who are set up to do it right, providing quality training for not only your onsite students, but also for your offsite over-the-Internet students.

Below is a brief description of the equipment and processes we have in place to be able to provide high quality training live over the Web. But, before you dive into the list, let me say that not only is providing this kind of training not right for every instructor/school, it is not right for every student.

The ideal student would have the following characteristics:

• Tech savvy and able to work with a technician who set them up with the virtual classroom software.

• Excellent and reliable high speed Internet connection.

• Willing to sit in front of their computer day after day through the course.

• Highly motivated to take the course over the Internet in order to benefit from the special student status, i.e., saving money on travel, lodging, and food, as well as being able to remain at his or her office or home while taking the course rather than being away.

• Able to arrange to have someone to practice on during class to both learn the techniques and experience coaching on the techniques.

Here is the setup of our classroom:

• 2 Internet connections: the primary being cable, and the secondary being DSL (Digital Subscribers Line) with an automatic switching device that would automatically switch from the cable broadband connection to the DSL if the primary Internet connection failed.

  

• 2 virtual classrooms and three dedicated computers; the primary software package is run by two dedicated computers, and a secondary computer runs another virtual classroom software package in case one or more of the offsite student’s computers experience compatibility problems with any of the offsite student’s computers.

  

• 1 digital projector that would allow both the onsite and offsite students to simultaneously view videos of sessions or techniques shown to the class.

  

• 2 HD video cameras mounted at the back of the classroom which are set up to broadcast classes over the Internet (1 pointed at me at the lectern, and another calibrated to view the whiteboard), plus an additional HD video cameras as a backup if needed (back up Internet connections and cameras are a must when doing live webcasts). Finally, there was a fourth wireless webcam that was used to take the offsite students on a tour of the Banyan Hypnosis Center for Training & Services, Inc. which was enjoyed by all the onsite students. It could be used any time that the class went outside of the dedicated classroom. We used this when we take the class into areas of the office.

  

• 2 dedicated microphones mounted in the ceiling of the classroom to pick up the teacher’s and the students’ voices: These microphones were then run through a multi-channel audio mixer, and the output was then sent to the two computers at the back of the classroom broadcasting over the Internet.

  

• 1 digital audio recorder: Just to be on the safe side, we make digital audio recordings of the class in case one of our off site students had computer problems or Internet connection problems (on their side, such as their losing an Internet connection at their location). In that case, we could email them a recording of any part of the course that he or she may have missed while they were offline. (This was useful when one of our students who was retaking the class online and who lives in Singapore missed part of the course.)

  

• Extra computer monitor is set up at the lectern so that the instructor can see the online students live, and interact with them in a quality manner.

  

• 2-3 technicians to set up and run the system: If the instructor attempted to run the equipment required to bring the course to the offsite students, it would greatly decrease the quality of the class for both the offsite and onsite students. So, it is very important that this equipment be set up and operated by technical staff. The staff must be able to setup, operate and trouble-shoot any problems that come up in a timely manner, so as to not distract the instructor or onsite students. In addition, these technicians serve as engineers switching between the microphone of the instructor and the microphones used by the offsite students as they ask questions (in real time) or otherwise, interact with the instructor and the other students in the physical classroom.

  

• 1 telephone system with a speaker or earphone attachment to serve as a backup in case the audio has difficulties during the program. This came into use when one of the offsite students who was participating from his home in Mexico had some computer problems and needed to communicate via telephone during the scheduled practice time with the instructor or GTA.

  Each offsite student was required to do the same hands-on components of the training as the onsite students, which included practicing inductions, overt and covert depth testing, and age regression practice. And, just like the onsite students received supervision during these practice sessions. So too, were the offsite students able to demonstrate their abilities learned to the instructor, as well as being coached by assisting Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs). This ensured that the offsite students were gaining the same level of mastery of the techniques as the onsite students.

  

I expect that someday students (in every profession) will actually become accustomed to having the ability to choose to take their certification (and other) courses by coming to an onsite classroom, or instead choosing the money saving option of taking the class over the Internet in the comfort of their own homes or offices.

This is a huge savings on the part of the offsite students in many cases. When you take the course online, you do not have to spend money on travel, nor take the time to travel, or spend money eating in expensive restaurants, and so on. Also, for many people, they simply cannot leave their home or office to study because of certain responsibilities or handicaps.

Caution: It is very important that hypnosis instructors do not attempt to conduct training over the Internet unless they have the systems I have listed above in place. It is vitally important that the offsite students receive the same quality of training as the onsite students. It is also important that an instructor does not attempt to manage the equipment and conduct the class at the same time, doing so, would denigrate the experience for both the offsite and onsite students.

Finally, it is very important that backup systems be in place. The most important being: a secondary connection to the Internet that comes from a different source. For example, two cable or two DSL Internet connections would not suffice because if one connection went down so would the other one. Also back up computers, microphones webcams and so on are vitally important. However, one of the most important considerations is that you need to have, is a minimum of two technicians. It is far too likely that over the period required to teach a one hundred hour plus course, that your tech may become ill, or otherwise unable to run your equipment. So even if he or she is held up by traffic that means everyone is held up. “The show must go on” as they say, and if your only technician became unavailable, it would be a disaster for all of your offsite students.

According to the latest National Guild of Hypnotists Newsletter, “Dr. Dwight Damon, president of NGH, Inc., and Dr. Walter Brackelmanns, president of AAEH, announced this week that the Association to Advance Ethical Hypnosis is officially merging their membership into the National Guild of Hypnotists.”

This is important because the AAEH is the second oldest hypnotism membership organization, which was founded in 1956. The NGH welcomes the members of AAEH to its membership, and will have more information about the merging of the two organizations in its upcoming publications.
This comes at an interesting time in the history of the NGH, as 2010 is its 60th year. During its history, the NGH has always strived to “provide and open forum for a free exchange of ideas concerning hypnotism.”

I hope all hypnosis professionals will also take the time to learn more about the NGH, the one organization that is doing more to promote and guide the future of the profession of hypnotism. More information about the benefits of becoming a member can be found at www.NGH.net.

Fortunately, I was able to record this call and now it is available on our website, www.The7thPath.com.

The new audio program area is a password protected area. On the right hand side of the main page of the site is the link you need to access that page. It says "Login " right under the words, "Practitioners Area".

The login name is currently "practitioner", and the password is the First Recognition in lower case put together as one word. For example, if the First Recognition was, “Hypnosis is wonderful” then the password would be “hypnosisiswonderful”. I set it up this way so that all 7th Path Self-Hypnosis® teachers and practitioners would know the password, because you all know the First Recognition.

In this audio program, I get to answer questions about the use of the 7th Path Technique, the selection of the Delta word, why there is a charge for the teaching, and how to use the 5th Recognition in both the Short and Full forms.

I expect that this will be the first in a series of programs that I will produce on my favorite topic, 7th Path! Have a listen and get in on the conversation.

First off, just in case you didn’t know, I’m a member of the NGH. It is the only hypnosis organization I belong to other than the 5-PATH® International Association of Hypnosis Professional, which I founded for the ongoing development of 5-PATH® hypnosis professionals around the world (but that is a different story). I feel no need to join any other organization, and I don’t expect I ever will.

Here is the inside truth, unvarnished and straight at you. In the vast majority of cases, probably better than 99%, the number of clients you have and will ever get, do not come from who you are associated with (membership-wise) in any hypnosis organization. This is because your potential clients have no idea what the heck the different memberships mean.

ASCH will only allow membership if you are a licensed professional, and in the past, has worked against hypnosis professionals who are not licensed and do not have academic credentials such as a PhD or MD.

NGH is an inclusive organization that works to bring all hypnosis professionals together so that the profession can grow, so more people can be helped through the use of professional and ethical application of hypnotic techniques and processes. And, I believe, it would be a fair estimate to say that unlicensed hypnosis professionals are probably helping as many people, or perhaps even more people than the members of ASCH. Furthermore, the NGH does more to protect the right of non-licensed hypnosis professionals to practice (and therefore help more people) than any hypnosis organization of any kind located anywhere in the world.

So, having said all of that, it is important that all hypnosis professionals, licensed and un-licensed, understand that we don’t get clients because of belonging to one particular hypnosis organization or another. People choose an individual hypnotherapist for a number of much more important reasons.

Here are just a few:

1. They liked your website.

2. They liked your advertisement in the phone directory.

3. You helped their friend of family member (referral).

4. They took your self-hypnosis, or other class and like you as a person and as a professional.

And, all of these factors have one thing in common, this person who called your office to learn more about your service or to make an appointment with you, believed they could trust you to do good work and help them succeed.

I tell every class that I train, "Hypnosis is a confidence game. If you don’t get their trust, then there will be no game." The most important factor leading up to whether or not someone chooses you to work with him or her is whether or not you appear to be trustworthy. Since very few people have any idea about what the major hypnosis organizations stand for, or require for membership or certification, then belonging to one organization over another does not have any effect on whether they trust that you can help them.

At our center, we have helped thousands of clients. Each and every one of the therapists who have ever worked at our center have all had to have a current membership with the NGH and have all been certified by them. (My certification course results in NGH certification.)

The person who emailed me stating that she was changing from the NGH to ASCH, left me thinking, "What was she thinking?" I still don’t know. I mean, this makes no sense to me at all.

In the hypnosis video, Dr. Kramer discusses how he helps victims to remember the details of a crime, and also why forgetting such details is a protective mechanism.

He uses age regression to help victims to remember the details of the crime, and that new information can be very useful for police and can make all the difference in solving a crime.

He talks about how hypnosis is a normal state that anyone can go into to remember details from past experiences, and now, according to the report, a whole town is hoping that this hypnosis session will lead to the capture of an individual who sexually assaulted his client.

Elronn starts off by giving a brief overview of 5-PATH® and what he plans to do with this client.

Here’s what we do in Phase I with Mr. Vincent Van Gogh. This is the “PTC” or preparation, testing and convincing phase:

• First contact and first impressions of the client.

• Hypnosis pre-talk discussion. And, why we don’t use the hypnosis pre-talk video with Van Gogh.

• Pre-hypnosis interview, finding out his presenting complaint and special issues. His hypnotherapist teaches him, The Secret Language of Feelings.

• Selecting an appropriate and effective hypnotic induction for the client. His therapist chooses the Elman-Banyan Rapid Hypnotic Induction.

• Then covert testing is done for the deep level of hypnosis called somnambulism is done, and after that overt testing is done to convince him that he is hypnotized.

• We discuss when the hypnotherapist should simply complete the session with direct suggestion, or move on into Phase II (hypnotic age regression) in this session.

• A brief discussion about how we prepare the client for upcoming sessions through the use of post-hypnotic suggestion, such as one for instant re-induction of hypnosis in the next session.

I decided I just had to share it all with you on this site. Does it have anything to do with hypnosis and hypnotherapy? I’ll let you decide.

This is "Faith"

This dog was born on Christmas Eve in 2002. He was born with 3 legs – 2 healthy hind legs and 1 abnormal front leg, which had to be amputated.

He of course could not walk when he was born. Even his mother did not want him.

His first owner also did not think that he could survive and he was thinking of "putting him to sleep." But then, his present owner, Jude Stringfellow, met him and wanted to take care of him. She became determined to teach and train this little dog to walk by himself.

She named him "Faith."

In the beginning, she put Faith on a surfboard to let him feel the movement. Later she used peanut butter on a spoon as a lure and reward for him for standing up and jumping around. Even the other dog at home encouraged him to walk. Amazingly, only after 6 months, like a miracle, Faith learned to balance on his hind legs and to jump to move forward. After further training in the snow, he could now walk like a human being.

Faith loves to walk around now. No matter where he goes, he attracts people to him. He is fast becoming famous on the international scene and has appeared on various newspapers and TV shows. There is now a book entitled "With a Little Faith" being published about him. He was even considered to appear in one of Harry Potter movies.

His present owner, Jude Stringfellow, has given up her teaching post and plans to take him around the world to preach that even without a perfect body, one can have a perfect soul

In life there are always undesirable things, so in order to feel better you just need to look at life from another direction.

I hope this message will bring fresh new ways of thinking to everyone and that everyone will appreciate and be thankful for each beautiful day. Faith is the continual demonstration of the strength and wonder of life.

Regarding working with people on weight loss when one is not yet become a model of a successful outcome… The way I worked with clients when I was overweight was to let them know that I was “in process”. I did not work with weight loss clients until I had lost 15 pounds. After I had started to lose the weight, then I was able to share what was working for me and my other clients, i.e., The Secret Language of Feelings, and 7th Path Self-Hypnosis, and now my “secret project”.

My recommendation is that since you said that you have a “very successful approach” then you need to go through it yourself and be successful using it. I believe that we, as professionals, need to “walk the walk” to the very best of our ability and demonstrate that what we do really works. Having a healthy and energetic body is essential to being successful in so many endeavors, and it is especially true in the profession of hypnotism.

I can only recommend that those who have a weight issue, especially hypnotists, do something that has proven to work for others (unless they have a medical condition that prohibits doing so). For me, that is The Secret Language of Feelings, and 7th Path Self-Hypnosis, and now my “secret project”.

When people would ask, which didn’t happen very often, in fact, I can’t remember a time when it did, “If hypnosis works for weight loss, how come you are so overweight?” what did you do? I’d let them know that being overweight had been a problem all my life and now I have found a way that works for me, and I would cite whatever amount of weight I had lost up to that time (be it 15, 25, or 35 pounds, etc). Of course, if I was not getting nearer my goal, I would never have done weight loss. I would have felt like a hypocrite in doing so.

I know of overweight hypnotists who are obese and are not having any success in losing weight who hold themselves out as being able to help others to lose weight with hypnosis. I know that if I were a client I would not be very hopeful that I was going to be helped by that hypnotist. I teach my students, helping clients to be successful is part of the first phase of the hypnotherapeutic process.

My advice to you is to overcome the weight issue. Obviously hypnosis should be a part of that process, but there is also a lot more you can do like I mentioned above.

In this article, they talk about how emotions originate in the subconscious mind. The only problem with the research in my opinion is that they do not talk about the unconscious mind which controls automatic body functions which result in the "feeling" of the emotion. It is the feeling of the emotion that informs the conscious mind about the internal state we call emotions.

Cal Banyan: First, I want to say thank you for taking the time to do this interview! I am very proud to have been your teacher, contributing to your development and training in hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

Please tell us about your background before becoming a hypnotherapist?

Giselle Gianella Gabe: Thank you Cal, for this wonderful opportunity and I feel honored to be interviewed by you! It is great to be able to share the knowledge that you have generously given to me. Your generosity as a teacher and a mentor has inspired me. Before I got involved in the world of hypnosis, I had this inner urge to find effective ways to really help my clients and this is what led me to 5PATH® Advanced Hypnosis and 7th Path Self-Hypnosis®.

I worked with many clients for several years in the Osawa Clinic in Kobe-Japan, applying Japanese Pelvic Therapy and Chotai Shiatsu. But something was telling me that my clients needed more than just physical help. I felt they needed a different kind of caring, something that will help them with their thoughts and their emotions as well. So when I moved to Singapore in 2002, I began searching on how I can help them in that way.

Cal: Why did you decide to learn hypnosis and become a hypnotist and hypnotherapist?

Giselle: Actually, what got me realizing that it is all about “mind over matter” are the Gnosis Studies I took in Japan for 4 years. One of the subjects was psychology and a related area, what fascinated me, was how people get ill in their minds first, and then ill in their bodies. In Singapore, I had the opportunity to explore the areas of NLP and in that class I tasted hypnosis and then I wanted to learn as much as I could about hypnosis.

Cal: Very interesting, please tell us about your professional training.

Giselle: I was trained in 1997 as a practitioner in Pelvic Therapy and Chotai Shiatsu in Japan, which gave me the great opportunity to learn about the body in regards to the physical and energetic levels; I continued my training and became an instructor trained by Pelvic Therapy and Chotai Shiatsu Founder Nakano Funio. In Singapore,I did the NLP Practitioner and Master Practitioner training, then I started seriously training in Hypnosis. In 2004, the course I took with you Cal, was the most profound hypnosis training I could ever imagine taking. It was your Advanced Hypnosis 5-PATH® and the 7th Path Self Hypnosis® training that blew me away!

Right after, I started practicing Advanced Hypnosis 5-PATH® and teaching several 7th Path Self Hypnosis® group classes. My one-on-one sessions and group class sharings deepened my understanding and really inspired me to take a giant step and become an Advanced Hypnosis Instructor and 7thPath Self Hypnosis® Instructor with you Cal, in 2008. As part of my research into the mind-body-spirit connection, I broadened and deepened my learning by becominga Reiki and Sekhem Master. I also have a passion for the Shamanic traditions and been trained with the Inka Wisdom School in Peru.

Cal: Your background is very diverse and I’m very glad to hear that you were so taken with my training course. I can see that you really want to help people.

Please tell me about your practice.

Giselle: I love my practice! It is something that gives me great insights on how to help people and it also gives me ideas for when I conduct group trainings, which is the area I am dedicating more time to. I have trained students in Singapore, Japan, Peru and the Philippines.

Cal: Tell me, what is your approach to doing hypnosis and hypnotherapy?

Giselle: My approach to doing Hypnosis is simple, first I build rapport and trust with my clients. To me this is the most important thing before doing hypnosis, as I believe hypnosis is a dance, as you say. Then I proceed by using 5-PATH® and teach my clients 7thPath Self-Hypnosis® as well.

Cal: Tell us about an interesting case you had recently, if you can.

Giselle: One of the most remarkably successful cases that comes to mind was a client I will call “Jenny” (not the real name). Jenny was diagnosed with several auto-immune disease disorders by her doctor. She had a long history of mental, sexual, emotional and physical abuse by both parents. She was under psychiatric care for 14 years trying to solve the issues. She worked with her doctors and psychiatrists along with her parents and basically experienced no improvement during that time. Also during that period, she had four miscarriages. I could go on listing more problems that she had!

Through the use of 5-PATH® and 7thPath Self-Hypnosis® she experienced stunning results and is living a much better, happier and fulfilling life, and she reports that her medical conditions have healed.

As I worked with her, which was one of my most challenging cases, the best part for me was that I learned a great deal about doing hypnotherapy and a lot about myself as well.

Cal: What area do you serve, and what kinds of issues do your clients have?

Giselle: Mostly I see clients from Singapore and Malaysia. But I have taught 7thPath Self-Hypnosis® to people from many different countries. I work with a wide variety of issues, and integrate the use of 7thPath Self-Hypnosis® and 5-PATH® with my other skills, and as a result I work with many medical conditions. My clients are usually spiritual people and as a result they enjoy 7thPath Self-Hypnosis® a great deal.

Cal: Do you have any specialties or favorite issues you like to work with?

Giselle: My favorite issues to work with are the ones which result in my clients finding their inner self or real self as some of them call it. (The Informing Soul Technique is so useful in these cases.)

For some reason, I have had many clients who have come to me unknowingly being “possessed”. These cases have been very fascinating. As I worked with these types of cases, I learned about the mysterious world of lost souls, ignorant spirits, and entities. One fascinating thing about thisis that there is “God” inside of these clients and their ‘entities’ are somehow teachers in disguised…

Cal: That is interesting. You have a very spiritual practice. Why do you think that your clients select you over other hypnotherapists?

Giselle: I feel they choose me because I am passionate and strongly believe in my work and my clients can sense this. Cal, can I share with you things that my clients have told me? They say: “Giselle, you are sincere, I can feel you genuinely care and on top of that you are very knowledgeable” Another client has said “I feel very comfortable with you, as you have shown me that there is hope.” After I worked with clients,they say: “Giselle, you didn’t give up on me and that made feel supported and confident that I will get great results by continuing my sessions with you.” I am humbled when they say things like, “Giselle, you are a gift to this world, thank you for sharing your light…” These are comments that are common among my clients and makes me feel very grateful.

Cal: Do you teach any classes? If so,tell me about them.

Giselle: Oh Yes! I L-O-V-E teaching the 7thPath Self Hypnosis® System class, as to me, this is one of the tools that is most effective in helping my clients clear erroneous beliefs, thoughts, emotions, cellular memory, anything that does not serve them, or, anything that stops them from living the life they are destined to live, a self-fulfilled, empowered, extraordinarily and youth-filled life.

Cal: What would you like everyone to know about hypnosis?

Giselle: That Hypnosis is totally AWESOME! It works in areas in which any form of talk therapy cannot reach. It is completely safe, and has helped millions of people around the world. I want everyone to know that hypnosis can be a powerful tool to reach your known or unknown potentials and that hypnosis is a gift that all human beings are meant to experience from professionals that are experienced, passionate, genuine, honest and want the very best for their clients.

Cal: I can really feel your passion! What do you see as being the future of hypnosis?

Giselle: This is exciting Cal, I see the future of hypnosis as: 1) a topic that is taught in schools, 2) a System that is part of the curriculum of any form of talk therapy, 3) preferred choice by people to help them reach their potentials, goals, financial freedom, optimum health, healthy and meaningful relationships and connection to whatever people conceptualize higher as their higher power/higher love/higher wisdom or divine, to be. In this case, I particularly speak about the 7thPath Self Hypnosis® System.

As for the future of 7thPath Self Hypnosis® System, I see it taught in Short Forms in primary schools and in its Full Forms in high schools and communities.

May I share about my mother and the 7th Path Self Hypnosis® System?

Cal: Giselle I remember you mentioning the amazing transformation of your Mother with the 7th Path Self Hypnosis® System, can you share with us?

Giselle: Sure Cal, my Mother is another breath taking case I had; since she is my mom, I have seen her ups and downs, her sufferings, her victories and challenges and one of the things that used to hurt me the most was to see my mom flipping like a yo-yo between being so depressed to being so angry fighting with me and all her children, basically destroying her life and creating big trouble for us, her children.

After I graduated from your class Cal in 2004, I did have an amazing transformation myself and got to understand that my mom was not the ‘culprit’ of all my life ‘sufferings’ and specially understood that she was not the reason for my dad leaving us in ashes…

Because I was practicing the 7thPath Self Hypnosis® System and also receiving 5-PATH® sessions to clear myself, I started to behave differently with my mom, I became patient and caring…so one day she said to me smiling ‘Giselle, you have changed…what have you done?’ I explained about 5-PATH® and the 7thPath Self Hypnosis® System, she got very interested and asked me if I could do 5-PATH® for her, I said ‘mom, I would love to, however, we have a protocol and we are advised not to practice on parents or relatives as that may cause inhibition. What I can do for you is I will teach you the 7thPath. Would this work for you? She says ‘whatever you have done has worked on you…so I guess can help me too…’ and so I taught her all the Recognitions in Spanish.

Before she learned 7thPath Self-Hypnosis®, my mom had ‘scary voices’ talking in her head. Back then, she needed to take sleeping pills so she could sleep and this made her drowsy and irritable during the day; her head moved by itself as if she has a nervous tick; her blood pressure was very high; she had psycho-somatic asthma; she constantly lost money; my mom used to fight with all her children; she was one of the most negative person there was… and nobody wanted to be around her when she was like that. She was not able to live on her own; she was constantly seeking pity and attention from her children and friends and this made my siblings very angry (I used to get very angry about it too).

She began her practice of the 7thPath Self Hypnosis® System, 2 months later, the ‘scary voices’ in her head stopped… she got the insight that the voices were there because she was possessed by “ignorant spirits” that were wondering around the hospital where she was put unconscious with anesthetics so many times in Japan and while she was unconscious, the ignorant spirits attached to her. After another month, her head stopped shaking by itself. She has continued with her daily practice ever since 2004. She is a much more positive and happy person with no more negativity, and no more self-pity. She forgave my dad and now they joke together, talk harmoniously; my mom now is living in the Caribbean-Dominican Republic, living on her own, she is 62 years old and went back to University. She is now into creating jewelry with pearls and crystals and she is a “happy camper” with no more high blood pressure or asthma issues anymore.

I feel so proud of my mom and my siblings are also very happy for her as well. Now they also listen to her and as my mom says ‘Life is beautiful…’ (This is a statement that would not come out of her mouth 5 years ago!)

Seeing my mom free herself from suffering was one of the greatest gift I could ever ask for, you have a mother too and I am sure you can relate to what I am saying dear friend…

What I learnt from her is not to push others to change. I used to do this with her and it didn’t work at all. When she saw the change in me, then she felt inspired to do so for herself and she has done it beautifully. As Gandhi said ‘be the change you want to see.’ After seeing the transformation in my mom, I get his message.

After 7 hours of pedaling, we managed to ride from Irvine to San Diego, California! All in all, we rode 109 miles. It was a planned 101 miles but we missed a couple of turns and got some "bonus miles" in.

In the photo above, you can see Memo (Guillermo Guiterrez) and I posing right after the ride. Before the ride, thanks to my secret project, we both lost a significant amount of weight. I’ve lost 27 pounds and he has lost over 30, and completing the 109 mile ride is a great indication of our new fitness and energy levels.

The subject of this episode: Technically, what is hypnosis and suggestibility, really?

• What is hypnosis? In this video I provide you with a 3 part definition.

• What is suggestibility? We need to understand what suggestibility is in order to really understand what hypnosis is.

• What does hypnosis feel like? I talk about a huge mistake new hypnotists make when evaluating their client’s depth of hypnosis.

• How can we know if someone is in hypnosis? Hint, don’t ask the client, “Did you feel hypnotized!”

• What is the difference between guided imagery, meditation and hypnosis, or self-hypnosis? There is a very big difference regardless of what you may have been told. Hint, it’s all about suggestibility.

• Do those “blinking hypnosis glasses” work? The answer is if they create a state of heightened state of suggestibility which has been verified by testing each client, then the answer is “yes”. If depth testing is not done, then you can’t really claim that they work.

• What do you think of hypnotists and hypnotherapists who post “sexy videos” on the Internet, where they supposedly cause subjects to have an orgasm, or when they make people feel and act drunk using hypnosis? You’ll have to watch the video to hear my answer to this one because my response is a bit complicated.

Well first, a big part of my success is that I’ve been at it for a long time. But past experience isn’t all that it takes. I have to keep up with the latest techniques, (fortunately, they are pretty easy if you know what to do).
