gee whiz good episode!
i like how you express that anger is another “flavor” of fear (anger = awareness of something being/seeming unfair = threat to one’s security or interests). i think all phases of 5PATH are meant to reduce the threat response related to fear/anger/guilt-shame etc. that drives irrational and unhealthy behavior.
i find it useful to think of 5PATH more in terms of the emotions tackled in each phase that could be driving problem behavior — not the technique in each phase. Then the question of whether or not a certain technique (whether forgiveness, AR, etc) is necessary can be understood to be somewhat missing the point.
i think the impact of FOO is dependent on a person’s goal and their nature, but it’s certainly not something to be avoided just because it doesn’t seem to fit, and that’s not something that can or should be guessed at ahead of time anyway. There have been many cases where, if I thought about it beforehand, FOO wouldn’t make any sense, but it turned out to be critical to the solution.
if i tried to selectively employ FOO based on speculation, there would have been so many missed opportunities for major breakthroughs. it gets to your point about avoiding construction of, or belief in, any narrative outside of the direct hypnotic experience.
ps. meredith is cool!
Thanks, Steve! And I couldn’t agree more! I am constantly surprised by what comes up in FOO and FOS. Whether those phases makes sense or not, they are always beneficial. At a minimum, teaching people a new way of looking at other people’s behavior as well as that feelings are good and we feel best when we process them instead of avoiding them is hugely beneficial. But, most clients going through FOO and FOS get so much more than that.
Thanks for watching and for your thoughtful comments!
