Week of Power Advanced Hypnotherapy training course is coming to the UK in April 2007! I have to tell you that I am very excited about bringing this course to the UK next year. I have never been to the UK before and this is going to be a great time to do it!
In case you didn’t know, our Week of Power program is an advanced hypnotherapy training course for hypnotists and hypnotherapist who want to greatly boost their skill level and confidence. The core of this course will consist of training and certification in 5-PATH® and 7th Path Self-Hypnosis®. Sincerely, I can tell you that the hypnotherapists who take this course and master the material can be considered among the very best in the profession.
Here is a photo of the latest class to graduate the Week of Power Advanced Hypnotherapy Course held this year at the NGH Convention. I follow it with just some of the wonderful feedback that we received from these happy grads.
- “As someone who originally qualified with distance-learning, I found the Week of Power awesome and very aptly-named. I thought I was doing pretty well before, but now I feel like I’m doing at least twice as well! I would recommend this course to anyone who really cares about becoming the best in their field, including 5-PATHERS who have already taken the training previously. We’re not called One Per Cent-ers for nothing!”
Niki Cassar DCH, DHP, GQHP, UK
- “I thoroughly enjoyed the week of power. Cal’s teaching was excellent and his wit, warm and wisdom made it a most enjoyable, enriching and enlightening experience.”
Tricia Woolfrey FCIPD, MNLP, UK
- “I think now that I have been back in the field I have so much better an idea of what I received on the Week of Power. When I signed up for the training I thought it would be useful to have a structure around which I could process my work with clients. The training has certainly delivered on that score but what I had not expected was how generous and inspired a trainer Cal is. The love, care and attention he brings to his work is truly awesome and yet exactly as it should be! This means that, in my experience, the vast majority of trainers out there – and I have seen a fair few in my years – use training events as ego massaging and ownership staking of their particular patchworking of other people’s reworking of previous ideas and that Cal brings training back to what it ought to be: the mindful garnering and harvesting of one lot of experience offered for the enrichment of one’s peers and students.Cal has inspired me to remember what I know and to believe in my ability to apply and develop the skills that I have been shaping with my senses over the years of my life. I am sitting so much more comfortably in myself and therefore so much more deft at what I am doing. The 5 ‘n 7 PATH system has brought a clarity and a wonderful ongoing international community of support to the development of my work. So thank you Cal Banyan, thank you.”
Foszia Turner-Stylianou, CH , UK
- “5-PATH® has given me a system to follow so I feel like I know what I am supposed to do with my clients. The class was very comprehensive and I felt that I had all I needed to begin using 5-PATH®. I purchased the online supervisions CD’s during class. I must say it is the best money I’ve spent. It is an extension of what we talked about in class, but Cal goes into much more detail. I really appreciate the transcript of what is on the CD that is included. Usually I will transcribe a learning CD, so this has saved me a lot of time and work. This CD set is worth every penny I paid!I think what impressed me the most was the amount of information that Cal shares with his students and the amount of information he puts in writing. That is so different from a lot of classes I’ve taken. Cal seems to go the extra mile and genuinely wants you to be successful. Thanks for a Great Learning experience.”
Debbie Preston, CH, New Hampshire
- “The Week of Power was a review of 5-PATH and 7th Path for me. There is so much useful information and insight packed into one week! The second time through I absorbed even more of it. I’ve taken classes all over the country and this one is the best by far. It wraps all the theory and practice into a logical and organized process, one that can really be applied with clients. Now I know what to do in each session… and what comes next.Cal Banyan’s Week of Power really pulls everything together. If anyone is floundering with clients or feeling like they are “winging it”, I think they should take Cal’s class. It is so worth the money and the time! Everything is covered; the 5-PATH hypnosis processes, getting started, booking clients, advertising, ethics, and even expanding to a hypnosis center. The learning doesn’t stop with certification; Cal continues to support his graduates with his supervision CDs, online information and groups’ interaction. Cal and Maureen Banyan are a great team; their practice is an excellent model to emulate and they are very willing to share their experiences.7th Path Self Hypnosis is a unique process teaching clients how to clear their own issues and allow abundance. I don’t know of another process like it! The class interaction and Cal’s support during 7th Path is an experience I won’t forget. You’ve heard the rest, now learn from the best! Be a 1%-er!
Thank You, Cal, Maureen and all the classmates in The Week of Power at NGH’06!”
Cindy Brooks, CH, New Hampshire
- “My week of learning 5 path was far more then I expected. Even though I was feeling good about my 4 years of working with clients,I was ready for something more powerful. I was especially impressed with the regression and forgiveness part of the training and started using the techniques immediately upon returning home. I am thrilled with the results so far and look forward to helping a lot of people in the future. Thankyou Cal Banyan for the excellent training. Thankyou to Maureen for the great phone tips which work very well. All the best…”

I was very impressed with the turn out last night! It was our very first meeting of the NGH Orange County, California Chapter. New members packed our classroom; energy and enthusiasm filled the air.
I was happy to lead this first meeting held in our classroom at our center in Tustin. As I led the first meeting, the discussion turned to a member telling me that they were excited because they had felt like they could really use the mutual support and focus that an NGH Chapter was going to give them.
As we discussed the new Chapter, many of the hypnotherapists in the room told me that they had belonged to other organizations but really did not feel like they were as cohesive or supportive as they expect the NGH Chapter to be. I know that things are going to be different now that we have an NGH Chapter here in the OC because we sponsored one for several years in Minneapolis, Minnesota before we moved a few months ago. Based on my experience supporting the Minneapolis NGH Chapter, I expect that this new Chapter will serve as a basis for a new feeling of strength and fellowship in Southern California which will lead to a lot of new energy in the hypnosis world here.
After some discussion about the purpose of the hypnosis organization the group came up with the reasons that they wanted to have an NGH Chapter here in Orange County, CA.
- Meet and network with other hypnotherapists in the area.
- Learn more about hypnosis and earn NGH CEUs.
- Build NGH membership and the profession as a whole.
- Build a referrals directory and mutual marketing efforts.
- Combine resources and provide a database of legal information about practicing hypnosis in California.
After the meeting I took the group on a tour of the Banyan Hypnosis Center facility. I think everyone enjoyed seeing what can be done with a professional hypnotherapy practice. We hold our center up as a model of what can be done when a sound business model is combined with leading edge hypnotherapeutic techniques such as 5-PATH® and 7th Path Self-Hypnosis®.
I want to take this opportunity to put out a call to all hypnotists, hypnotherapists and those interested in seeking training in hypnotism, regardless of whether you are an NGH member or not, you are invited to our next meeting! We want you to come and meet us and learn about us, and then we think that you will want to join us.
Next National Guild of Hypnotists, Orange County, California Meeting will be held at our office at 1431 Warner Avenue, in Tustin on November 8th, 2006 at 7:30 PM. Coffee, snacks and hypno-friendships will be provided.
By they way, there is more information available on the web:
We all look forward to watching this new NGH Chapter and the profession grow here in Southern California, and we hope that you will join us as we make history together!
I was delighted to have the opportunity to conduct this interview with Celeste Hackett who is a very successful Certified Hypnotist, and also another graduate of our hypnosis training at the Banyan Hypnosis Center for Training & Services, Inc.
Celeste also writes article for the Banyan Hypnosis E-Zine. Her readers certainly do appreciate her humor and depth of understanding about what it really takes to help clients as a professional hypnotist. She is also an active contributor to our Banyan Grads Email Group on Yahoo which is a source of ongoing support and education for 5-PATHers around the world. And, just to tell you a little bit more about Celeste and her dedication to the development of the profession she pushed and lead the way to what is now the first live face-to-face (via webcam software) professional hypnosis study group, where she leads other hypnotherapists in the study of advanced 5-PATH® hypnosis.
I highly recommend her to anyone living in the Dallas, Texas area if they want to use hypnosis to make positive changes in their life! Here office is called Family First Hypnosis and in addition to providing hypnosis in Dallas, Texas she routinely sees clients from surrounding areas like Plano, Allen, Mckinney, Frisco, Addison, Richardson, Wylie, Murphy and more.
And now on to the interview!
Cal Banyan: Celeste it is wonderful to be able to interview you like this. I so appricate what you are doing, not only going out there and helping a whole bunch of people by providing excellent hypnosis services, but also everything that you do to help other hypnotherapists.
So I have to ask, what got you interested in hypnosis and caused you to come all the way from Texas to our hypnosis training center?
Celeste Hackett: Before I was a hypnotist, I was a major market radio personality. At one point I did a weekly show called “Advice Line”. People would call in with personal problems and listeners were encouraged to call in to offer their opinions on how to solve the dilemmas they heard.
The show was mainly for entertainment, but it became quickly apparent that listeners to the show didn’t really believe people could change. I always argued that they could. After all, what are we here for if not to change and grow?
That hopelessness in our ability change, that the listeners believed and argued for, stayed with me and it was enough to nudge me into researching how people do really change. Again and again I was led to the subconscious mind and to hypnosis as the most direct method in making a real difference in lives.
Cal: You really came from a different profession! I think that the readers will find that interesting. I remember when you were going through our NGH Approved Hypnotherapy Certification course, I could tell that you really wanted to put this to work and change lives. Tell me a little bit about your hypnotism practice.
Celeste: My practice is very client-based. I cater to their needs and help them to become comfortable in my office in a matter of minutes. It’s not uncommon to hear that they feel like they have known me all their lives!
After my clients settle in, I go to work on getting a good understanding of how they see their issue and what changes they want to make. Then they fill out paperwork and watch a short video called the The Truth About Hypnosis. And, I must thank you Cal for creating that video it has been immensely useful for preparing my clients for the work that we do.
Once these bases have been covered it’s time for hypnosis in the “big chair” where everyone goes to change their lives, a wonderful cushy recliner.

I am excited to write and publish this interview with Tricia Woolfrey who provides hypnosis services in London. She is a successful hypnotherapist who has a practice on Harley Street in London. I met her this year at the National Guild of Hypnotists Convention when she when through our Week of Power Advanced Hypnotherapy Certification Course. It was a wonderful class which also had three other hypnotherapists from London or the UK. I really enjoyed their English humor!
Tricia was already and experienced hypnotherapist with a private hypnosis practice before I met her so I thought it would be interesting to interview her and learn more about her hypnosis practice and how she is integrating what she has learned.
Cal Banyan: Thank you Tricia Woolfrey for doing this interview with me. I am very excited about it. Let’s just get things started. How did you come to be interested in hypnosis?
Tricia Woolfrey: Hi Cal, I’m excited too. This is a great opportunity for me to talk about what I do. I am especially excited about telling everyone in the UK and London area about what I do.
It started when I was managing the HR function of an IT company and had heard a lot about NLP and how good it was for business and coaching. When I did the course, they taught hypnotic language which I found extremely interesting. I enjoyed the course but felt that it was more conducive to therapeutic work than the business world. Because I enjoyed the hypnotic module so much, I decided that I wanted to train to become a hypnotherapist. I haven’t looked back since and so much enjoy my work and the positive impact it has. I also like the fact that there are no office politics at all! Heaven!
Cal: Tell us about your office. Where is it set up and why you chose your location or locations?
Tricia: I have two practices – one in Surrey and the other in Harley Street. The Surrey practice is essentially a room in my home which has been specially designed for my practice – it is professional and welcoming. Since I have quite a lot of corporate clients in the London area, it was important that I struck a professional tone which did not alienate my mainstream clients and I think I have struck a good balance there. It is designed in colors and textures which are soothing to the mind, body and spirit. I have a selection of my certificates on display so that my clients are reassured of my credentials. I have a leather reclining sofa which my clients love. Harley Street is the most prestigious medical area of the UK and I have a hypnosis office there which I attend one day a week. In some ways it is easier to work there because I have the use of a receptionist who can manage people arriving early. This can be very difficult when you work from home. Again, it is designed to be professional and welcoming. I think having the London address is important for my corporate clients and that is one of the main reasons I work there. It works well for me, though I could do without the journey!
Cal: That’s great! So, I’m curious what kind of training do you have?
Tricia: Oodles! I have had most of my training in the UK and have trained with several organizations. There are a couple of reasons for this, the main one being that I wanted to find different ways of working so that I could flex my approach according to the needs of individual clients. I would certainly say that I have achieved this and I pride myself on being able to work with a wide range of people on a wide range of issues. I am trained also as an advanced hypnotherapist with The Institute of Clinical Hypnosis. I have specialist training in dealing with addictions, depression, anger, conflict, weight issues, irritable bowel syndrome, EMDR, EFT.
I also have had some training in nutrition which I find very useful for a lot of my clients – it is amazing how what you eat can affect your mood. I am a master practitioner with the National Centre for Eating Disorders and a Master Practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programming.
This year I attended 5-PATH and 7th-Path training which I enjoyed enormously. I think it is safe to say that I am addicted to learning! My next course is to learn about creating metaphors with John Grinder.

Most hypnosis certification courses don’t go into any depth about the history of hypnosis. Should they? Or, is it alright to just know what to do to help clients do what they want to do?
What do you think? Is it important to know if your instructor discovered or created all of the material that he or she is teaching? Does it matter really?
What would be the effects of not citing sources for our material? If we do cite the material how much should we cite? I hope you will read my new article on this topic.
Ever wonder who discovered or created: hypnosis, somnambulism, depth testing, depth scales, the principles of hypnotic suggestion, hypnotic age regression, Parts Therapy, self-hypnosis, and so on? Did your instructor leave that out? I know that I often do. Normally, I only cite who taught me and my major influences.
Can anyone recommend a really good history book that includes the modern history of hypnosis? I’d read it and make it recommended reading for my courses.

Below is a news announcement from the National Institute of Health. Read it and learn the details about how 1.6 American adults are using Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) to help with insomnia, including mind-body methods for relaxation. This shows that people are open to the use of these techniques and that it is a good time for hypnotists to get the word out, “Yes we can help you with that!”
From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH NIH News National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) http://nccam.nih.gov/

OVER 1.6 MILLION AMERICANS USE CAM FOR INSOMNIA OR TROUBLE SLEEPING
A recent analysis of national survey data reveals that over 1.6 million American adults use some form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to treat insomnia or trouble sleeping* according to scientists at the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), part of the National Institutes of Health. The data came from the 2002 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In 2002 the NHIS, an in-person, annual health survey, included over 31,000 U.S. adults aged 18 years and older. A CAM supplement to the survey asked about the use of 27 types of CAM therapies, as well as a variety of medical conditions for which CAM may be used, including insomnia or trouble sleeping. Survey results show that over 17 percent of adults reported trouble sleeping or insomnia in the past 12 months.
Of those with insomnia or trouble sleeping, 4.5 percent — more than 1.6 million people — used some form of CAM to treat their condition.
“These data offer some new insights regarding the prevalence of insomnia or trouble sleeping in the United States and the types of CAM therapies people use to treat these conditions,” said Dr. Margaret A. Chesney, Acting Director of NCCAM. “They will help us develop new research questions regarding the safety and efficacy of the CAM therapies being used.”
Those using CAM to treat insomnia or trouble sleeping were more likely to use biologically based therapies (nearly 65 percent), such as herbal therapies, or mind-body therapies (more than 39 percent), such as relaxation techniques. A majority of people who used herbal or relaxation therapies for their insomnia reported that they were helpful.
The two most common reasons people gave for using CAM to treat insomnia were they thought it would be interesting to try (nearly 67 percent) and they thought CAM combined with a conventional treatment would be helpful (nearly 64 percent).
In addition to looking at the data on CAM use and insomnia, the researchers also looked at the connection between trouble sleeping and five significant health conditions: diabetes, hypertension, congestive heart failure, anxiety and depression, and obesity. They found that insomnia or trouble sleeping is highly associated with four of the five conditions: hypertension, congestive heart failure, anxiety and depression, and obesity.
Other key points reported in the analysis include:
– Nearly 61 percent reporting trouble sleeping were women versus about 39 percent men.
– Insomnia peaks in middle age (45-64 years old) and a second increase appears in people 85 and older.
– African Americans and Asians appear less likely to report trouble sleeping or insomnia than whites.
– Those with higher education also are less likely to report insomnia or trouble sleeping.
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine’s mission is to explore complementary and alternative medical practices in the context of rigorous science, train CAM researchers, and disseminate authoritative information to the public and professionals.
