The Banyan Hypnosis Center for Training & Services, Inc. in Minnesota is Closed!

Well, the last client has been seen, and the last class has been conducted at the Banyan Hypnosis Center for Training & Services, Inc. located in Mounds View, MN! Greg had the honor of seeing the last client yesterday.

old-bhc-office-mn.jpg Now we are just packing up and taking care of a bunch of business details, like forwarding mail, changing addresses with all of the right people and businesses. Thanks goodness for wife, Maureen! She is so organized and she seems to be able to think of everything that we need to do to make this move. That’s why she is the General Manager and I’m just a lowly hypnotherapist! I couldn’t do it without her.

Good by old office. It has been a great 10 years!

We hope you will keep in touch as we move to our new office in Tustin, California, a suburb of Orange County.  Our toll free number will remain, 800-965-3390.

The Secret Language of Feelings is catching on in Singapore!

book-front-cover-secr-lang-_small.jpgI thought I would pass this along. It seems that the Singapore government publication, eCitizen.gov.sg likes my ideas about feelings and emotions, which I have published in my book The Secret Language of Feelings.

I am pleasantly surprised and honored to be named in the publication. This recognition is probably a result the training and promotion in hypnosis that I have conducted over the last few years in Singapore.

Thank you Singapore of the honor of being mentioned in your publication and for spreading the word!

Banyanism #2, “When something isn’t working that should be working…”

I just got off the telephone with a hypnotherapist who wanted help with a client. So while I have a good example, I am posting another Banyanism.

The hypnotherapist who called, went into a long explanation about the problems which he was having. The particular problem that he was having was that he could only keep one of his clients “in somnambulism for about 5 minutes and then she would fall asleep.”

Well, like I always say, “When something isn’t working that should be working, this usually means that something that should have been done before then was not done, either properly or completely,” (another Banyanism). So after listening to him for a while, I began to suspect that he was not properly testing for somnambulism, among other things.

Among other problems I suspected that he was having (i.e., not building sufficient trust, not doing a sufficient pre-talk, and using tests which are not valid tests for somnambulism) I believed that he was placing too much attention on how relaxed his client was physically, and as a result wound up spending too much time giving suggestions for physical relaxation. He also thought that “eyelock” was a test for somnambulism. It is not. It is a valid overt test for Hypnoidal, the lightest level of hypnosis identified in the Arons Depth Scale.

I suggested that he start doing instant inductions (i.e., B8WI), using one of the two covert tests for somnambulism (that I cover in my hypnosis training courses), doing a quick convincer such as eyelock, and then get on with his sessions. If he takes my advice, he will now be working with somnambulistic clients who don’t fall asleep on him. That should make him very happy, and make his clients more successful!

So there is the next Banyanism. If you keep it in mind you will be better able to troubleshoot your sessions when you have difficulty. For example, if you are attempting to conduct a hypnotic age regression session and your client is unable to revivify the session (meaning hallucinate experiencing the earlier event) then you have not successfully hypnotized and deepened your client to the level of somnambulism, the level needed to suggest revivification. As a further example, if you are unable to induce somnambulism, this usually means that the pre-talk is not done, and so on.

Margaret ‘Maggie’ Damon, Beloved Wife of Dr. Dwight Damon Passed Away

maggielg.jpgWe are very sad to report that Margaret ‘Maggie’ Damon, of Merrimack, died Saturday, April 22, 2006, at St. Josephs Hospital in Nashua, after a brief illness. Mrs. Damon was the beloved wife of Dr. Dwight Damon, the President of the National Guild of Hypnotists.

My wife and I have enjoyed getting to know Maggie while spending time with them at the National Guild of Hypnotists Convention, and Solid Gold Weekend events. We are very sad to hear of her passing, and invite you to visit the National Guild of Hypnotists website, www.NGH.net where a beautiful memorial page has been set up.

We hope you all will join us in sending prayers to the Damon family as they experience this very difficult time.

Maggie will be greatly missed. But heaven is a bit nicer for having her there now.

Banyanism #1, “Hypnosis is a confidence game….”

This is the beginning of something new. From time to time I am going to post a quick little something that is intended to help the working hypnotist or hypnotherapist. In my hypnosis training courses they are called Banyanisms. They are little bits of information that I “pound” into my students, that are very important to their success. I hope you will enjoy and benefit from them.

cal-smiling.jpgHere is the first Banyanism: “Hypnosis is a confidence game. If you don’t get their confidence there will be no game.”

By this I mean that one of the first things that a hypnotherapist needs to do when working with a new client to ensure maximum success is to get the client’s confidence running high. Her confidence needs to be high with regard to her decision to use hypnosis, that she can be hypnotized, and that you know what you are doing.

Here are 7 things you can do to make sure that you are gaining your client’s confidence:

1. Consistency of Presentation Don’t advertise your self and some huge institution when you have a simple but successful single person office. Be truthful in your advertising, and be who you are, and you clients will select you. This way when they meet you for the first time at your office they won’t feel like a great “bait and switch” has gone on, which would greatly lower her confidence in you.

2. Professional Presentation You might like to wear jeans and a T-shirt, but your clients will take you more seriously and be more successful if you dress in professional office attire. Research has shown that when doctors dress casually their patients are less likely to get and use the medications that they precribe. We want our clients to be compliant and professional dress can aid us in achieving this.

3. Excellent Pre-Talk Everyone that is of normal intelligence and willing to follow instructions can be hypnotized unless they fear hypnosis or have misconceptions of what it will be like. Give’m a good informative talk about what to expect before you begin the first session. Address common fears and misconceptions, and ask if they have any other concerns. If you have problems inducing a client, suspect that your pre-talk is not complete. I use a hypnosis pre-talk video to guarantee consistency and save time.

4. Excellent Pre-Hypnosis Interview Don’t go overboard and spend an hour talking to your clients about their problems before you begin the session. Just ask them for a “thumbnail sketch” of the problem so you can find when they first noticed the problem, what they have done about it in the past, and why they are seeking your services now. It is often useful to learn that they are motivated by some upcoming event.

5. Well Executed Induction Rehearse and learn your induction methods so that you can read them but not sound like you are reading them. Learn rapid and instant hypnotic inductions to get more done during your sessions.

6. Covert Testing and Convincing Once you have the client hypnotized, covertly test for hypnosis so that you know that she is hypnotized, and then do an overt test so that she knows that she is hypnotized. If you covertly test for a deep level of hypnosis like somnambulism, and then do an overt test for a light level of hypnosis, you can be confident that you client will pass the test and be convinced that she is in hypnosis. Everyone should do this!

7. Appropriate Work Durring the Session, i.e., DS, AR, etc. Once you have your client hypnotized make sure that the work that you do is directed at getting some results from the very first session. If you do Direct Suggestion (DS) work in your first session, make sure that the suggestions that you give your client is directly related to what the client came in to work on. If you do age regression work (AR) make sure that it is obvious to the client that the AR work is directly related to her issues.

If you do these seven things then you will gain your client’s confidence. Your sessions will go better, you clients will get better results, and you will get more referrals.

So remember, “Hypnosis is a confidence game” and strive first to get their confidence and you will do better in the hypnosis game, and that means more success for everyone.
