House and Office Shopping in the OC

Its 7:30 a.m. and I’m in my hotel room right now as I type up this entry. We are waiting for a real estate agent to give us a call with the latest office sites to visit before we get on the plane this afternoon and head back to Minnesota.

Here is a photo of one of the offices that we like so far. It is in the Irvine area. We have decided to lease for a year or two so that we can get a better idea of what we want to buy. There are just too many factors for us to consider before we will know just what kind and size of property we want to buy. For example, we are not sure whether or not we want to have just one office here in Southern California or two. If we decide that we also want to have an office in Los Angeles, then the size of our office in Orange County will probably be smaller. But if we are just going to have one office then the space will have to be larger so that it can house everything that we do, from hypnotherapy sessions, publishing, website development, product production and so on. We will keep you up to date as things develop.

On another topic, we think that we have found a home that we want to buy, and we are planning on making an offer today or tomorrow. This is all very exciting. The new house is just beautiful. By the way if you are not familiar with the OC area, you won’t believe the price of homes. I just read an article about the real estate boom in OC, the average home price is around $600,000.00 and there are more homes priced in the $1,000,000.00 range than any where else in the country. Talk about “sticker shock”! And, the price of a home here is going up at a steady rate of 15% a year. Wow!

Special Announcement! We are moving to California! Last Class in Minnesota

California Hypnosis School – Banyan Hypnosis Center for Training & Services , Inc. Providing Professional Hypnosis Training and Hypnotherapy Certification

Well, now the word is out. We are moving our center from Minnesota to California! We are now searching out a new home for our center, which will be in the Orange County area of southern California. This move is going to provide so much for me to blog about. I’ll share the process with you as we go through looking for a new office, and everything else that we need to do get our new Center up and running. I’m sure it will be an interesting journey!

Our goal is to be in place and seeing clients in June 2006. That means we need to get all moved out of our current location, where we have been for 10 years (Happy aniversary to us!), find a new office and house! Then move all of our stuff into both places. That is just the beginning. We then have to do all of the marketing to let all of our new potential clients and students know that we are there. Wow, my head is starting to spin. Thank goodness I have my wife Maureen, who is much better at organizing big projects like this than I am!

So, keep checking back here. From now on in addition to all of the usual news and opinions that I annouce, I will also be reporting on this great adventure that we are taking on.

By the way, this means that we will no longer be conducting classes in Minnesota. If you or someone you know has been thinking about taking our NGH Hypnotherapy Certification Course with 5-PATH(tm) and 7th Path Self-Hypnosis(r) tell them that they need to get on the ball and register for this class if they want to take it in Minnesota. This class is filling up quickly! We have only four seat left for this March class.

The next step for us will be our flight tomorrow morning! We are going to be looking at some sites for the Center. Maybe I’ll even put up a photo of what we look at. It all depends on the time factor and whether of not I have anything of interest to report.

So check back, and wish us luck!

Hypnotists, NGH and Union Stand Together in Connecticut

I want to report that hypnotists are standing up along side the National Guild of Hypnotists, the National Federation of Hypnotist Union to get the facts out about our profession, after bad press in Connecticut regarding sexual abuse allegations. If you haven’t yet joined, or if you have let your membership expire, read this story and get your memberships in order. No one is doing more to protect your right to practice hypnosis.

Hypnotists Meet in Hartford
Monday January 23, 11:31 am ET
HARTFORD, Conn., Jan. 23 /PRNewswire

Close to one hundred professional members of the National Guild of Hypnotists met yesterday in Hartford regarding proposed legislation affecting the hypnosis community and profession in the state of Connecticut. In welcoming the attendees, Dr. Dwight Damon, president of the fifty-five year old professional organization, emphasized that as they have become international in scope, with members in 56 countries, they have also upgraded their criteria for membership as well as their standards of practice and code of ethics. However, he points out, there is no sure-fire way to regulate the morality of individual practitioners in any profession.

Citing statistics, Damon explained that there does not appear to be other national published cases involving sexual assault and hypnotism in the past five years. However, in the same period of time there have been hundreds involving medical, legal and teaching professions. Damon continued, “We, as an organization have to keep our standard of practice and code of ethics high and continue to immediately weed out any ‘bad apples’ we become aware of. Sexual assault is a crime and we stand firm with law enforcement that it should be treated as such.”

“Obviously, the word hypnotism in conjunction with the recent Connecticut sexual assault case gave rise to many of the old myths about a hypnotists having ‘control’ over the person who is hypnotized. Yet, in this enlightened age we know that this is not true — that the person being hypnotized is actually in a state of heightened awareness — able to refuse any suggestion – - and can terminate the session at any time. It would appear then that this case was an abuse of trust rather than an abuse of hypnotism.”

Also speaking on the program was the Reverend C. Scot Giles, a minister and Board certified chaplain from Wheaton, Illinois, who is the Legislative Liaison Officer for the National Guild of Hypnotists and the National Federation of Hypnotists, Local 104, OPEIU, AFL-CIO. Giles conducts a medically sanctioned hospital-based program utilizing hypnosis for cancer patients, and is a recognized authority on medical hypnotism. Giles mentioned that hypnotists have practiced in Connecticut since 1840 without incident until the recent Johnstone case.

He further said that NFH local 104 would have no problem with a basic registration law similar to those already existing in some states, which require a strict code of ethics, such as the National Guild of Hypnotists already has in place, and, possibly awareness training in issues of sexual harassment and multiculturalism.

John Olson, of the Connecticut AFL-CIO also spoke to the group emphasizing that they back the union members who also are members of the National Guild of Hypnotists, the largest and oldest organization of its kind in the world. He pointed out that the standards of practice and code of ethics of the organization are stringent and designed to protect everyone who uses professional hypnotism services.

A discussion and question and answer session closed this meeting and it was noted that there are 281 professional hypnotists listed by NGH in the state of Connecticut who, he estimates, have helped an estimated 125,000 citizens with hypnosis during the past 12 months.

Contact Dr. Dwight Damon and tell him and the others “thank you for helping to protect our profession.” Call or click, (603) 429-9438 or ngh@ngh.net

Great News! The Week of Power is coming to the NGH Convention! :-)

NGH Convention 2006As many of you know, once or twice a year I teach our Week of Power, Advanced Hypnotherapy Program at the Banyan Hypnosis Center for Training & Services, Inc. here in Minnesota. This class is for hypnotherapists who were trained somewhere else and want to become 1%’ers by becoming certified in 5-PATH(TM) and 7th Path Self-Hypnosis(R). This has been the perfect route for hypnotherapists who were previously certified elsewhere, and now want to take their practice and skills to the highest levels.

Over the years I have been teaching 5-PATH(TM) only certification courses at the NGH convention, first as a very condensed 2-day class, then because of the success of the course, we managed to get the course extended first to a 3-day class and then finally last year it was a 4-day class, which was MUCH better. But, there continued to be the problem of not having time to teach 7th Path Self-Hypnosis(R). :-( Well, I am very happy to report that things have just changed for the better!

For the first time ever, we are going to be able to teach the whole course at the NGH Convention, the whole 7-day shebang! I am so excited about this. I hope that you can help out a bit. If you know anyone who has been thinking about taking this advanced course at our center, please let them know that it is coming to the East Coast at the NGH convention in August, 2006. The dates will be the three days before the convention and the next four days after the convention, August 8-10 and 14-17, 2006.

Here is the other good news, I just got off the telephone with Elsom Eldridge who does a lot of the work on setting up the convention and I asked him if those who have gone through one of the previous 2, 3 or 4 day courses in the past want to retake it so that they can refresh, update, and get certified as 7th Path Instructor, could do so at a reduced tuition? He said that could be arranged. I will still have to work with them to settle on the tuition for the course. I’ll let you know what I find out as soon as I find out what it will be, both for the full course for first timers, and for the re-takers.

“I just love it when a plan comes together,” as they used to say on the A-Team television show. :-D

Calvin Banyan, MA, CI, CH, Answers Other Hypnotherapists’ Tricky Questions About Doing Hypnotherapy

Calvin Banyan, MA, CI, CH, Answers Other Hypnotherapists’ Tricky Questions About Doing Hypnotherapy

Hello Readers! As you probably know by now, I frequently receive questions from other hypnotherapists about how to improve their skills and abilities for a number of different issues that they work with. From time to time, I will let you know about it when I write in response to an interesting set of questions.

I recently received a series of questions about smoking cessation work from another hypnotherapist. I thought that the questions and my answers would be useful to other hypnotherapists, so I have posted part of it here. Use the link above if you would like to read the whole Q & A.

Hi Tina,

Thanks for you kind comments about my book (co-authored with Jerry Kein), Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy: Basic to Advanced Techniques for the Professional. Regarding the writing style of the book, you are exactly right, since I do a lot of teaching, I wanted to approach it in a very explanatory style which would be easy to digest. I wanted it to be a very practical book! So, thanks again.

Regarding your questions about doing the Informed Child Technique for smoking cessation session, let me first tell you that we approach our work with smokers in two different ways:

Regular 5-PATH(TM) sessions, where we go right to the cause of the inability to quit smoking, and neutralize the emotional components, while using the insights gained to supercharge the direct suggestion work done at the end of each session. This approach is used when it is determined that the smoking problem has a strong emotional factor, i.e., smoking to deal with the emotional factors, both from the past and in the present, presenting in the client’s life.

A special abbreviated version that takes only two, one to one and half hour sessions. In this case, it has been determined during the previous interview process with the client, usually on the telephone, that the smoking problem is mainly a bad habit in which emotional factors do not play a significant role. To learn more about this approach please read article #4 on this page of our website, http://www.hypnosiscenter.com/free-articles-list-of-hypnosis-articles.htm.

To answer your questions more directly:

You asked, “[Should I] regress them back to a time before they smoked the first cigar (or cigarette) and do informed child (let adult talk to child & give the insight)?” (Please click on the link above to continue reading the Q & A.)

A Hypnotherapist Asks Why We Should Avoid Dual Relationships

Calvin Banyan, MA, CI, CH, Answers Other Hypnotherapists’ Tricky Questions About Doing Hypnotherapy-Inductions,Deepening,Age Regression,Past Life Regression, Parts Therapy, and More

From time to time I will post a question that I have received from a fellow hypnotherapist, and my answer to it. In this Q&A John, one of our Chinese 5-PATH(TM) graduates in Singapore asks me why he should not work with friends and colleagues. I hope you enjoy our exchange. To read the entire text use the link above.

Hello Calvin,

How are you keeping my master. Hope you are keeping well in Singapore. I have been very busy with my work with asylum seekers and refugees. I have also hypnotized quite a number of people after the training. Now I am doing sort of part-time hypnotherapy.

I have one important question for you. You told me that I should do age-regression for colleagues or friends, why? I have a friend whom I hypnotized for nail biting habit, but she didn’t quit after the first session. And now she asked for another session. I plan to do 5-PATH(TM). I am just a bit worried as you told us in class I shouldn’t do age regression for friends or colleagues.

wish to hear from you soon. Thank you

Have a wonderful day,

Cheers,
john

Hi John,

Again, I am so glad to hear that you are using hypnosis to help others. It is a wonderful and satisfying thing to do.

In your email you asked me about why one should avoid working with friends and colleagues. This is a very good and important question. Age regression is a kind of uncovering therapy. By this, I mean that information can be discovered that the client may not be consciously aware of. This can cause a number of different problems:

1. Ethically we should avoid dual relationships. By that, I mean that when we do therapy with someone, we should only have a professional relationship with that individual. This is because the other relationship can interfere with the work done in therapy. Also, the work done in therapy can harm the other relationship.

2. When a client agrees to do hypnotherapy with you that involves age regression or other uncovering techniques, they are consenting to deal with personal information with you, however, since age regression can uncover information that the client is unaware of consciously, he may later regret revealing some personal or embarrassing event from the past, which would be appropriate in a professional client-therapist situation, but not comfortable in revealing to a friend or family member that he will have to continue seeing. So then, … (Click link above to read entire article.)
