I thought that I’d foward a link to this interesting article discussing the idea of stress being a causal factor, or affecting
outcome of women with breast cancer.
I wish I could do a better job of evaluating articles like this one. One of the problems with articles like this, is that we are not reviewing the actual research paper that was published which would give us a better idea of what was done.
I think that medical research like this needs to move beyond thinking that either stress causes something or it doesn’t, into looking at things from a more integrated way, i.e., using the Diathesis Stress Hypothesis, for example, which suggests that when disease comes up it may be caused by both stress and some physical predisposition to the problem. In such cases, the same amount of stress would lead to some people getting sick and some remaining
healthy. I also like to add to this hypothesis that there are two kinds of stress, internal and external. Furthermore, that in most cases it is the internal stress that is the most important factor because it is constant.
Internal stress can consist of negative self-talk, painful emotions that have been unexpressed and/or unresolved, as well as negative stress-causing beliefs (i.e., I’ll never measure up, there is something wrong with me, I’m going to Hell, and so on). External stressors include all things that must be dealt with in the environment, ranging from normal day to day stressors like work, family issues, however small or great, even war and natural disasters, and chemical toxins.
With this view, we should take care to treat people with chronic illnesses in a more holistic way, helping them to both take care of their bodies through appropriate medical treatment, and helping toresolve internal stressors, usually issue from the past.

Again medical science confirms what many working hypnotherpists’ have known for years. Properly conducted hypnotherapy can be a very effective for IBS (Irritable Bowl Syndrome). Professor Whorwell concludes, “The term hypnosis was coined by a Manchester surgeon, James Braid, early in the nineteenth century, and it’s been in and out of fashion ever since. I’d like to think that our Unit has brought hypnotherapy back to Manchester, and helped improve its legitimacy.

Are you thinking about becoming a professional hypnotist or hypnotherapist? If you are, then perhaps you have been trying to do some research on the different ways to get the training that you need to become certified and be successful in your new practice.
Of course we want you to consider our National Guild of Hypnotists Hypnotherapy Certification Course, but here is some information that we think that you will find useful no matter which course you decide upon.
- Does the instructor or school have a license to teach hypnosis and hypnotherapy in that state?
- Does he or she have a successful practice and office or center that can be used to demonstrate how a successful practice should be set up?
- Does this instructor still see clients? Or is the course taught on experience or training that may be outdated?
- Is the instructor recognized by the profession through membership in the National Guild of Hypnotists, with awards or other distinctions?
For more factors to take into consideration and how to get the answers you need I have set up a webpage for that purpose. Click on Hypnosis Training Choices now to learn more.

Hello Everyone — Below is part of an email that I wrote to one of our grads who is an MD. He told me in his letter that he liked 5-PATH(TM) because it is so systematic, and that it lent itself well to research trials, and that he was in the process of setting up such trials with the Mayo Clinic. He also asked me about what kind of serious illness I suggest that he use in his research on how hypnosis can help with such illnesses.
The following paragraphs contain my response to him, “I’m very glad to hear that you are putting together a trial of hypnosis for end-stage diseases. That is really wonderful. And, I am especially happy to hear that you are going to work with Mayo, since they are just down the road from me.
“I love research and if there is anything that I can do to help, please let me know. You asked if I were to study hypnosis for serious illness, what would I choose to treat based on results at our center. First I have to say that we don’t do much work with serious illness. Mostly we work with normal everyday people with normal everyday problems, though we have had positive results with a few such cases including cancer, kidney disease, IBS, and a few others, including psychosomatic illnesses.”
“That being said, I recommend that you focus on working with diseases that we know are negatively affected by stress. By that I mean, diseases that are known to get worse in stressful situations, or when the client is experiencing chronic stress.”
“The Parkhill/Kein/5-PATH(TM) approach to hypnosis involves going in and finding, and then neutralizing these emotionally stressful issues, which patients hold within themselves. This kind of approach to hypnosis in turn creates an environment within the patient which will optimize healing. I believe that this kind of hypnotherapy should be used to support the medical treatment of all serious illnesses.”
I thought that some of you would find that intersting, real evidence that hypnosis is being treated with more and more respect by the medical community.
Bye for now,

Today I met with Jerrie Johnson, the President of the NHFC and I have to say that I was impressed. She told me the story of how the grassroots organization developed right here in Minnesota, and is now growing nationally. And, I want to help her!
I first heard about the NHFC when I read an article about how the organization was helping people to take back control over who they could choose to see for their own health care. Did you know that in many states you are restricted as to who you can legally see to help you to overcome your problems or illness. In some states, you may not be able to choose to see a chiropractor, massage therapist, hypnotist, acupuncturist, homeopath, and other helping professionals? Why? Because in some states offering such services can lead to arrest with the charge of practicing either psychology or medicine without a license. Even doctors and psychologists can lose their licenses for practicing these healing arts in some states. What ever happened to the rights of “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness”? What happened to freedom of choice?
The NHFC is changing this very big problem one state at a time, through helping people in those states by developing leaders who know how to work within the system to pass laws that assure your right to choose.
When I first heard about this organization I contacted the National Guild of Hypnotists. I wanted to hear what Dr. Damon the President of the organization, and Scot Giles the one person who knows more about the legal side of the practice of hypnosis than anyone else I know. They told me that the NHFC was doing a lot to help complimentary and alternative medicine practitioners to be able to practice. I instantly decided that we were natural allies, and contacted Jerrie Johnson.
Today, Maureen and I both became members of the national and state organization. I want to encourage all hypnotists who want to ensure their right to practice, as well as everyone who would like to ensure their right to choose hypnosis to join the NHFC.
Here is how you can learn more about them and become a member of this important group. Go to their website at www.nationalhealthfreedom.org. Tell them Cal sent you.
I’ll see you at their national conference on October 28th through the 30th, 2005 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
